Thanks. Which model/year do you have?

[–] mfat@lemdro.id 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Lol. Did you see GPD's 10 inch laptop?

[–] mfat@lemdro.id 2 points 2 months ago

Below 10 inch is too small.

T460 has a 14 inch screen.

I need something super compact and below 1kg.

I want a proper laptop with keyboard.

[–] mfat@lemdro.id 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah you're right. I need a powerful machine with over 10gb of ram for fhd video editing and web browsing.

And they are sub 13 inch?

[–] mfat@lemdro.id 1 points 2 months ago (5 children)

Sub 13 inch thinkbooks are low-spec school laptops AFAIK.

Thanks. I've tried tablets and still prefer laptop form factor.

[–] mfat@lemdro.id 1 points 2 months ago

This is overpriced. Have you looked at Starlite tablet?

The 10 inch one looks interesting. Thanks! Are these compatible with Linux?

I have been thinking about self-hosting my personal photos on my linux server. After the recent backdoor was detected I'm more hesitant to do so especially because i'm no security expert and don't have the time and knowledge to audit my server. All I've done so far is disabling password logins and changing the ssh port. I'm wondering if there are more backdoors and if new ones are made I can't respond in time. Appreciate your thoughts on this for an ordinary user.

I watched a video by Chris Titus in which he encouraged everyone to install auto-cpufreq immediately since it does wonders for battery life on laptops.
He said it was superior to TLP and powertop auto-optimizations. Has anyone actually used this for an extended period of time? Does it really work as advertised?

I've installed TLP on my Lenovo ThinkBook laptop and was wondering if there are additional steps I can take to extend the battery life when using the laptop unplugged.

Could you please share more tips and tricks for maximizing battery life on Linux laptops?

I have many nerdy friends who have been Linux users for ages. But most of them don't know such a thing as Openwrt exists or have never bothered to give it a try. It's a very fun piece of software to play with and can be extremely useful for routing traffic. Wondering why it isn't more popular/widely used.

I'm looking for an Apple MacBook Air M2 alternative that could run Linux.

I need something fanless, super lightweight with very long battery life. The only apps I use are Shotcut video editor, Chrome and Firefox.

Any advice?

Is it a good idea to get a MacBook Air m2 and use something like Asahi Linux or should I wait for arm linux laptops to become available.

I do a lot of text editing for work and there are some phrases that I have to type frequently. What's the best way to quickly paste those phrases into a document using a shortcut or keyword? I mainly use Kwrite and Kate as i prefer plain text editors and need no formatting.

I know Debian and others can breathe life into older machines. But i wonder if there are any distros with serious optimizations that I haven't heard of. I've already tried MX Linux on an old Thinkpad SL400, and didn't see any difference from plain Debian.

Update: thanks for the great suggestions. Forgot to say many distros feel zippy and fast until you open a web browser. Appreciate your thoughts on which web browser to use too. So far I've had a positive experience with Thorium and Chromium.

Focalboard is an open source, self-hosted alternative to Trello, Notion, and Asana.

I really like gnome and how it looks. However every time I try it I find myself in need of more functionality and so I install a bunch of extensions. For example I can't live without a dock and some sort of system tray that shows which apps are running in background.

Sometimes the extensions have small UI inconsistencies or use more memory than usual. That's why I totally ditched gnome and switch to KDE.

Also I tend to think it's been designed for people who are more comfortable using a keyboard. I'm mostly a mouse person.

Do any of you run pure gnome with no extensions? How do you cope with the lack of a dock and system tray?
