Bluesky has revealed how it plans to start making money without necessarily having to rely on ads. The platform will remain free to use for everyone, though it’s working on a premium subscription that will provide access to profile customization tools (remember when Myspace offered that for free?) and higher quality video uploads.

One thing that you won't get as a paid user, though, is any preferential treatment. Unlike certain other social platforms, Bluesky won’t boost the visibility of premium members’ posts. Nor will they get any kind of blue check, according to chief operating officer Rose Wang.

At this rate we will end up proving Jack Dorsey right when he left Bluesky.

But everything else is stupid

To be completely honest I think most sane people are going to be okay if bluesky ends up as even a slightly better version of what Twitter was.

Then there will be check marks for the accounts and priority in appearing in other users' feeds.

They claim to be a public benefit corporation, so while they obviously need to get income to run servers and fund development, their objective as a company isn't just to maximize shareholder value.

I don't know where/how to find their actual foundation documents to see what those actually say for their balance of profit vs mission.

Can't they change this status?

If nothing else the atproto is pretty great, we're starting to see a proper federated net start opening up around it.

Check state registration office. Could be there.

I mean paid fediverse doesnt give you extra features. Unless you count a sense of satisfaction supporting open platforms

Would just having a supporter badge & supporter plan(s) not suffice?

As in 'Im paying so this as an open service exists' and not like 'Im paying so I need to get something more'?

Just peer pressure, eg every megacorp needs to have a golden supporter badge or it's not paying it's fair share & everyone knows it.

I think it would insure a more democratic system in the long term, and even a sustainable financing system for other instances to implement (and even other fossy projects in general).

Eh. I'll just use Mastodon and make new friends. Pay a few dollars to help my admin run things.

Bluesky, you were the chosen one, you had to destroy Twitter/X, not join by force. You were going to give balance to the force, not leave it in the dark.

Lots of money is found in exploitation of people and their data. Bluesky has only one place to go to make lots of money in social media.

they like to pretend they have account portability, but the truth is they own the only router enabling that feature. good luck people

I'm still banned from there after saying, regarding Eneloop batteries, the white ones are better than the black ones (if you need slower self discharge.)
