Stoat (formerly known as Revolt) is a selfhostable, FOSS replacement for discord [Group chats and voice channels you can join any time].

Cool new name, however not as easy to use in other languages.

Voice chat is stil not officialy implemented.

Self-hosting there. Apparently nothing to do for you if you had already hosted before the name change.

The Android app has unfortunately disappeared (not been updated) on F-droid.

Edit: added short description for clarification

I wonder who made the legal threats. I suspect it was Element (Matrix), as they are the only ones with a possible to confuse trademark in the same business sector ("Riot" the old name of their webclient).

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 9 points 4 months ago (12 children)

do you think they would spend their little money on this?

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 4 points 4 months ago (7 children)

You mean the multiple millions of VC money and crypto investments? Absolutely.

The Matrix foundation also would have plenty of money if it wasn't just a front for Element and most funds being siphoned off to pay for services provided by Element.

Hey I know this is an old comment but could you elaborate on this? I'm trying to choose between Matrix and Stoat and no matter which is better, Matrix is out of the question if it's into crypto bullshit.

These days not so much, but you might find their contracts with the military also objectionable.

But they got a major early investment in 2018 from Status, a cryptocurrency/web3 company, and later in 2021 an even bigger one in relation to Protocol Labs, who peddle their own cryptocurrency.

But personally I would not recommend Stout either as it is not a serious project nor does it federate. Maybe look into XMPP or DeltaChat.

Thank you for the info. I looked at people discussing Matrix for ages here and nobody brought this up? What the hell?

Do any of these options offer screen sharing with audio? That's literally the only thing I care about in terms of one on one chats that only Discord can do.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Well, this is kind of work in progress for XMPP and DeltaChat doesn't support it. But you can for example try out https://movim.eu/ which is a webbased xmpp client (with PWA app) which does support screensharing in small group calls.

Matrix stans mentally block out the many issues it has, so take everything they say with a grain of salt 😅

This Movim thing is giving me really good vibes! No AI in sight, nor crypto shit. Thanks so much for the suggestion! Why don't I hear anyone talking about it? If you have any other smaller open source projects to suggest, please let me know lol

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Xmpp has no marketing budget and a lot of people just decided it is old and always share bad experiences with it from 15 years ago 🤷

[–] cloudskater@pawb.social 1 points 3 weeks ago

Damn that's... Really sad lol
