Please don't ask what the guy who was in charge of Unit 731 (and his second in command) did after WW2 or why the Washington Airspace Museum is full of german names.

NATO was formed as an antirevolutionary inter-imperialist coalition military. The entire purpose of NATO is to protect imperialist countries and kill off any leftists that stand to get in the way of western plunder.
