The only one I’ve played is Metal Slug 4 , which is pretty fun. Any bangers y’all recommend?

Pulstar, Blazing Star, all other Metal Slugs. I'd say most of the KoF titles but I think out of these listed here only XIV has rollback netcode so the others might be iffy to play online (wink wink Fightcade) Anyway if you just want the best ones, I'd say KoF '98, 2002 and XIII.
