A place to share alternatives to popular online services that can be self-hosted without giving up privacy or locking you into a service you don't control.

Rules:

  1. Be civil: we're here to support and learn from one another. Insults won't be tolerated. Flame wars are frowned upon.

  2. No spam posting.

  3. Posts have to be centered around self-hosting. There are other communities for discussing hardware or home computing. If it's not obvious why your post topic revolves around selfhosting, please include details to make it clear.

  4. Don't duplicate the full text of your blog or github here. Just post the link for folks to click.

  5. Submission headline should match the article title (don’t cherry-pick information from the title to fit your agenda).

  6. No trolling.

Beeper mini has been a sad saga to follow :(

Imo it's not really sad. Anything that supports apple's shitty garden is bad

Anything that is actually helpful and useful helps to keep better in touch with aunts and cousins and my parents who all have iPhones and I miss out on group chats since they wont install or use anything else. Apple isn't going to get rid of their garden unless forced so I'm glad someone is trying something.

You’re right. It’s really funny that the same people that champion interoperability always shit on Apple products and talk about how they should just end.

You're right, I'm wrong. The other alternative is to buy into the garden.

When I uninstalled whatsapp it took some people half a year but finally all installed either matrix or signal. I am sitting in a good boat, others are not so lucky.
