A lot of people recommend AudiobookBay but FreeMediaHeckYeah warns to only use their torrents. Are there any known safe sources that provide direct downloads of audiobooks? Preferably something I don't have to sign up for.

And no, unfortunately I do not have access to a library at this time.

I recommend Soulseek as well. You can find almost any audiobook on there, no VPN needed. Use Nicotine+ on desktop and Seeker on Android. iPhone users are out of luck though.

Hoopla or Libby. Have a family member or a friend get a library card then give you the number. Download these apps and then use the library card information they give you. There you go.

May I ask why you can't use the torrents on Audiobookbay? I use it and it works great. Torrents usually download in just a few minutes.

Wow first I'm hearing of this, how can I add it to Prowlarr?

[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 3 points 16 hours ago

Probably doesn't want to pay for a VPN.

OP said "only use their torrents" and they want direct download options...

[–] superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I know, and I'm wondering why they dont want to use torrents

Ah ok, I see. I read your response in the wrong way, my bad.

I use Nicotine+. It connects to the Soulseek network. I find many audiobooks there. Usually fast downloads. People share directly from their computers.

So you’re als uploading automatically? Isn’t this the same as torrenting?

[–] HyonoKo@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 hours ago

Exactly what dubyakay said. Also you don’t have to share anything if you don’t want to. No automatic upload.

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 2 points 9 hours ago

No, because you share individual folders accessible to anyone. It's not homogeneous data that is pooled together based on hash.

If you have a copy of Dungeon Crawler Carl, and another guy has a copy of Dungeon Crawler Carl, people can choose to download from either of you, but not from both of you at the same time.

[–] Teknikal@eviltoast.org 3 points 15 hours ago

I didn't ever make an account there I just paste the hash into Tixati but yeah if your client doesn't support it you can also convert the hash to a magnet link on a lot of sites.

Ive used myanonamous for years, its a private torrent tracker. Obviously needs sign up though sorry.

[–] Milksteaks@midwest.social 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I just gotta say the sign up process during open enrollment is quite onerous. They want to have a meeting/interview with you on your main ip without VPN. If you have a seed box or use a VPN or proxy you have to contact them tell them the provider of said seedbox vpn proxy. The global and individual ratios are also kind of annoying to maintain.

If you only torrent a few times a month it's much easier to go with Anna's archive or audiobookbay. You can leech and seed as much as you feel necessary without having to keep ratios

[–] fizzle@quokk.au 2 points 4 hours ago

Yeah. Private trackers are always a bit weird with their invasive signup stuff. Not gonna defend them on that front. I guess they're trying to ensure that you haven't been banned previously. It's daft but it's they're in charge I guess.

I will say though other private trackers seem to have a weird kiss-the-ring and beg forgiveness king of reverence for mods in their forums, but that doesn't seem to be a thing at MAM thank fuck. It's kinda sickening the weird god-status mods have in some trackers.

Maintaining a ratio at MAM is a whole different game to trackers that host movies and TV. You can't ratio-farm with the same methods. The trick is to just continue seeding things indefinitely. Even if you're not uploading and earning any ratio you still get bonus points and can convert them to upload credit.

It's true that if you only download things occasionally there's better alternatives - but that's ever the case with private trackers of any kind.

You can find some on soulseek. Would need to create a username/password but no email required.

Librivox.org has most of the public domain stuff and cross posts to archive.org, my favorite so far is the sleepy hollow reading by Chip

IRC is pretty good. There are bots that serve up e-books but many also have audiobooks. It’s direct download with a few extra steps.

[–] AlfalFaFail@lemmy.ml 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

There are web based torrent downloaders like WebTorrent. But you'll probably need to sign up for audiobookbay or hope that some public service like The Pirate Bay has what you're looking for.

[–] MissingInteger@lemmy.zip 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

You don't need to sign up to audiobookbay. Just paste the hash into your torrent client.

[–] AlfalFaFail@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 hours ago

Yeah! I saw another commenter say that. That's awesome. Had no clue. Thanks!
