Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Kwin workspace rules not working and Evolution not remembering passwords in KDE (sh.itjust.works)

Hi everyone!

I'm a 90% satisfied Gnome user only looking for more customization possibilities.

I had tried KDE on a VM, but, since I have a Steam Deck (Steam OS), I thought I should try to fully make it usable as a computer in case I'd need it.

I kind of managed to recreate the Gnome workflow where you switch between workspaces.

I've also set up kwin rules telling, for instance, Firefox to open on workspace No 2 on startup.

I don't know why, but that doesn't work for 2 of my main applications.

I use Evolution mail and it always starts on the wrong workspace. Same for OnlyOffice, but for this one I can't even create a kwin rule as I don't have that option while right clicking on the far right of the app. They're bot installed as Flatpaks.

I wanted to take a screenshot of the issue, but Spectacle doesn't allow me to take a screenshot when the right click menu is open..

Also, Evolution can't seem to remember my passwords despite allowing them to be saved in the keyring. Since I have around 10 calendars, it means entering 10 passwords at startup..

Suffice to say that my experience with KDE isn't great so far even if I'd really want to try it a bit more..

Does anyone knows how to solve these issues?

Edit: In the end, using alt+F3 did the trick in order to apply window rules to OnlyOffice (but not to Evolution) and I switched to Thunderbird for my KDE install in order to avoid the keyring issue

It certainly isn't a permission issue like others are claiming at least for the window rules. It could be a bug, but as far as I know the steam deck does not use the latest version of kde, so it may already be fixed and isn't worth reporting.

As for onlyoffice, if I had to guess. It is forcing its own window decorations and therefore you don't get all of the same options as with windows that use the breeze decorations from kde. However you can still create window rules for these window. If I recall correctly. The default shortcut is alt + F3 which should work regardless of which decoration the window is using.

What does the kwin rule for evolution look like?

Lastly, the password thing is the only one that could be related to a permission issue. I however don't believe you should start mixing keyrings. kwallet is probably already installed and running. Like I replied to one other person already. Both gnome-keyring and kwallet use the secret service standard. The only reason it could not work is if evolution hardcoded gnome keyring instead of relying more generally on secret service. However, I doubt that. You could even use keepassxc as a secret service provider if you wanted to. Although it is a bit more annoying in practice.

Oh thanks for the alt + F3 tip as it worked for OnlyOffice.

Now I just have to solve the issues with Evolution, so its keyring issue and the fact that it deletes the kWin rule every time.

The password thing is because Evolution is made for Gnome and needs gnome-keyring plus some Workarounds on anything not-Gnome.

Btw, can we please have a universal keyring with alternative frontends already, just like portals?

We're basically already there. KDE has already moved to the secret service standard that is used by gnome keyring. The real issue in my experience has been applications hard coding a dependency on gnome-keyring and not secret service. Some applications such as keepassxc and mailpring have fixed that hard coded isssue, but it is still an issue in other applications.

I don't use Flatpaks much but having read many posts about Linux stuff it seems possible your issue is permissions. IIRC you can use Flatseal to fix that.

What are the permissions you think I should change? In Fedora (Gnome) the same Flatpaks don’t show these issues with the default permissions.

Evolution is a Gnome software so you'll probably need to install gnome-keyring.

I use session restore with my KDE and most windows end up back to the workspace they were. It's somewhat annoying that not all go back to where they were but I've learned to live with it. May or may not have anything to do with kwin rules as I've not manually set anything.
