There are two types of movie going experiences. One where you want the audience to be perfectly quiet and just get absorbed into the movie experience... And the other where audience participation is a big part of the thrill. If you go to an opening night showing, it's typically the latter, especially for Blockbuster or cult favorite. Both types of experiences are good, but some of my most memorable movie experiences were loud cheering for the hero, people making comments, audience participation showings.

There's an old movie with some kind of audience participation culture where people dress up and yell during movies but I can't remember what it is. I think they have annual showings in some independent movie theatres. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

There's a few. Rocky Horror Picture Show is probably the one you're thinking of though.

I went to an interactive showing a few years ago and had a blast.

Some people in the audience did a whole call and response thing with the narrator which was a lot of fun.
