I get the sentiment, but this is defintely stinkier, larger shit than the status quo of the US and downplaying it as its been this way for 50 years is somewhat dangerous messaging.

[–] LowResBeer@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 hours ago

Americans are so painfully and pathetically uninformed on their own history. It's genuinely disturbing.

[–] procapra@lemmy.ml 6 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

While I understand how you feel, you gotta think about how news gets reported.

Republicans aren't so far off when they talk about the "liberal news media". The news reports democrats failings significantly less, or frames it using more neutral language than how republicans are reported.

During bidens presidency I literally never heard anything about deportations, yet he did deport a significant amount of people. More than the amount we've seen from trump (so far).

No matter the justifications, the tone, or the methods, deportations still happened, and currently more of them happened under both Biden and Obama than with Trump. People most certainly were hurt and/or killed in that process too.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world -4 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

The number of deportations aren't the major problem here, it's the nature and methods they are using.

[–] LowResBeer@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 hours ago

WHO BUILT THE CONCENTRATION CAMPS FIRERETARDANT?!?!?! WHO BUILT THEM???

HMMMM

Great question to google if you dont know the answer.

[–] dogbert@lemmy.zip 9 points 7 hours ago

We used to deport 4.6 million people with DIGNITY! 😤

[–] dogbert@lemmy.zip 1 points 8 hours ago (4 children)

Give me a fucking break. ICE shooting 2 people is worse than dropping 635,000 tons of bombs onto Korea 🤣

Grow up.

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 12 points 7 hours ago

Have you considered those two were white, though?

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world -2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Some crazy whataboutism. Both are bad. Why are you making it a contest?

[–] RiverRock@lemmy.ml 1 points 22 minutes ago

You're right, there's no contest. One is millions of times worse

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world -5 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

Hostile relations with foreign nations is status quo for the US. The current level of violence on their streets instigated by the feds coupled with the desecration of constitutional rights and congress refusing to their legally obligated duties is not.

[–] FireRetardant@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

This administration is still doing all that awful shit and more. The rate of atrocities is increasing and broadening.

WWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTT?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?

You can NOT be serious?!?!

Obligatory disclaimer: I am anti Imperialist and anti Capitalist. The American Empire has been a force for oppression and destruction since its founding.

OK, now, saying that Trump is basically the same as other presidents on foreign policy is ridiculous. In just a little over a year into his second term he has continued to brutalize the same people and countries that the US has historically but has also:

  • engaged in economic warfare against nearly every country on the planet
  • threatened military action against the US' closest allies
  • kidnapped the democratically elected leader of a sovereign country
  • cut off virtually all foreign aide
  • Unilaterally pulled out of just about every treaty to which our government was a party

He is objectively worse than our status quo bad and arguing otherwise is just petty and ignorant.

[–] dogbert@lemmy.zip 4 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

threatened military action against the US' closest allies

AKA, threatened white countries instead of the other guys. This is worse somehow.

kidnapped the democratically elected leader of a sovereign country

Remember when Obama murdered Gaddafi and turned Libya into a slave-state? America’s history of regime change has its own Wikipedia…

cut off virtually all foreign aide

Most “foreign aid” provided by America is used to make the global south dependant on their help and further entrenches colonialism.

Unilaterally pulled out of just about every treaty to which our government was a party

Breaking treaties is probably the most American thing in history. How do you think the country was founded?

[–] humanamerican@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

AKA, threatened white countries instead of the other guys. This is worse somehow.

Not instead. In addition to. Which, yes, is worse.

Remember when Obama murdered Gaddafi and turned Libya into a slave-state? America’s history of regime change has its own Wikipedia…

Yes, I know my government loves regime changing other countries. Trump has escalated the level of brazenness with which we'll do it, which makes him worse. You seem to think that saying Trump is worse implies that our past leadership wasn't bad.

Most “foreign aid” provided by America is used to make the global south dependant on their help and further entrenches colonialism.

Yes, USAID was primarily a vehicle for soft power, and much of our "aide" was actually just propaganda (Voice of America, etc). But cutting off food and medicine to millions of poor people is objectively worse than not doing that.

Breaking treaties is probably the most American thing in history. How do you think the country was founded?

You seem to be a victim of binary thinking. Are you incapable of recognizing that breaking ALL the treaties all at once is different from breaking some treaties some of the time, even if the latter is also bad?

Your argument is petty and unsubstantiated.

[–] dogbert@lemmy.zip 3 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

Trump has escalated the level of brazenness with which we'll do it

“video of his last moments shows rebel fighters dragging Gaddafi out of a drainage pipe, beating him and one of them sodomizing him with a bayonet before he was shot several times.”

Here’s a video of Hillary Clinton laughing about it: https://youtu.be/6DXDU48RHLU

Pretty brazen my friend… I’d say Maduro got off pretty light.

I can absolutely concede that Trump is doing bad things in his own unique way. I just think comparably it’s not that different than the status quo, and the reaction from white Americans on this topic is hard to take seriously at times.

[–] humanamerican@lemmy.zip 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I know all about how Gaddafi died and how the Clintons are sociopaths. Doesn't change the fact that unilaterally kidnapping Maduro is a new level of brazen, because it removes even the weak normative barriers that were in place before, when the US at least tried to manufacture consensus for its bullshit. You will undoubtedly claim that doesn't matter, but it does. Trump has lowered the internationally accepted barrier to foreign fuckery in a way that will have lasting ramifications.

Most of the people ICE has killed this year alone aren't white.

I'm not white.

Again, saying Trump is worse doesn't mean America was good before.

[–] dogbert@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

“At least they used to brainwash us before they did regime change!”

Really illuminates where your priorities lay. You miss Americans being soothed into imperialism. I can promise you, the victims of these crimes were not soothed into their demise. Do you think the people of these foreign nations give a fuck about how good Americans feel about murdering them?

This is an infantile degeneracy and I urge you to seek personal growth and reflect on these opinions.

[–] humanamerican@lemmy.zip 0 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I'm done trying to argue around your strawmen. You clearly have no interest in even trying to comprehend what I'm saying. Toodles

[–] dogbert@lemmy.zip 0 points 6 hours ago

Good, get lost 👋

[–] humanamerican@lemmy.zip 0 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

ICE has killed at least 9 people just since the beginning of the year. US bombs have slaughtered thousands of Palestinians, Iranians, Yemeni, Russians, etc, since Trump took office.

Maybe you should grow up?

[–] dogbert@lemmy.zip 1 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

ICE has killed at least 9 people

“It was actually 9!” Wow 🤣

Oh my god thousands of people!? Geez, imagine if America ever did that in the last 70 years… Unheard of!

[–] humanamerican@lemmy.zip -1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)
[–] dogbert@lemmy.zip 4 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Convincing Americans that the people they murdered are real human beings is exhausting and demoralizing. Sorry mate.

[–] humanamerican@lemmy.zip -1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Convincing random internet dickheads that they're being dickheads is exhausting and demoralizing.

[–] dogbert@lemmy.zip 4 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I think my position is a lot more important tbh.

[–] humanamerican@lemmy.zip -2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Well, based on what you've said so far, your position is that

  • Saying Trump is worse than the average American president somehow implies that The USA was never bad until Trump arrived
  • All Americans are responsible for what our government has done, including shit it did before we were born
  • Being upset that our current president is terrorizing us at home means we are immature

I contend that your position is asinine.

[–] dogbert@lemmy.zip 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah I can see how my position would be pretty upsetting if you just make up a bunch of shit. Poor fella…

[–] humanamerican@lemmy.zip -1 points 7 hours ago

I didn't make any of that up. Go reread your comments.
