Maybe they don't know about cURL, and that's why they don't use it.

A better thing to write would be: try cURL. It is this and that, bla bla bla.

Why not use openssl s_client?

Okay wait - I’ve used cURL for other stuff but can I just go and download e.g. from a file hosted using cURL and entering my credentials with -u?

jdownloader isn't just for downloading, it has features to download from sketchy free upload site used by piracy sites much better than a browser.
