I'm completely speechless. This looks so terrible I thought it was a joke, but apparently Nvidia released these demos to impress people. DLSS 5 runs the entire game through an AI filter, making every character look like it's running through an ultra realistic beauty filter.

The photo above is used as the promo image for the official blog post by the way. It completely ignores artistic intent and makes Grace's face look "sexier" because apparently that's what realism looks like now.

I wouldn't be so baffled if this was some experimental setting they were testing, but they're advertising this as the next gen DLSS. As in, this is their image of what the future of gaming should be. A massive F U to every artist in the industry. Well done, Nvidia.

The issue here is that the filter is taking a not-realistic graphism and forcing it to be realistic (and, along the way, completely changing unrelated artistic intentions). The desired outcome would be to leave thing as unrealistic as they were, as intended initially. It's not related to being picky about realism.

If an AI company takes Ocarina of Time, turns it into a realistic game while changing everyone's hair color and skin tint*, and claim it is obviously superior, gamers are not going to be happy. The inside of that tree is not going to inspire the same feeling when using fully realistic lighting.

The goal posts did move a few years ago, as a lot of people got bored of realism and more into stylized 3D. All the realistic games kind of end up looking the same and the Sifu-Lorn's Lure range of polygon count is much more exciting.

*i'm not obsessed with skin color ok? it's just the game isn't giving me much to work with here

Mostly agreed. For me the actual biggest problem here is Nvidia presenting this as the assumed default experience everyone obviously wants and using a heavily genericized face as a win. The tech needs to be much more energy efficient and configurable on both the developer and end-user side before I'll give it any serious attention.

Regarding future versions of this tech, I think "death of the author" still applies to video games, so changing artistic intent isn't always bad, especially for games that get frequently replayed. I certainly don't play stock Skyrim or Minecraft anymore. To use your example, yes, a photorealistic (attempt of) Ocarina of Time would probably be too off-putting, but give me style options like BotW, Spiderverse, Pixar, anime, etc.? I'd be down to try those.

They needed to use two whole ass 5090s to fuck up a game character that already looked great (and even sexualised to a degree). This anti gamer crap is funny since they are a consumer group that gets called out if they want less and also called out if they want more, they get called every silly thing when ever someone (normally by the very people working in the industry that relies on those very consumers) has nothing of value to say.

This move has been almost universally panned by the very people they are trying to sell to. The idea that what any market wants changes is also not at all new or odd. We are in interesting times where most have issues buying food and shelter and yet here we are being pissy about gamers not wanting to spend literal 1000s of dollars on hardware to run things that are seen more and more as greed fueled slop. And this flopping of "new" tech is also not new or odd at all, do we all forget the many many examples of tech that the market just does not embrace?
