Why would I waste money on winRAR when 7zip is open source and free right there?

[–] Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 23 points 8 months ago (4 children)

7zip is just so far superior in every way, it's crazy people use anything else imo.

Better compression, password protected files, better speeds. So many features.

Peazip is also good for the same reasons 7zip is.

I just use gzip because it's built-in

A person of good taste, I see...

Lots of other software makes use of 7zip, because it's open source and free and you don't need to pay to be allowed to integrate it into your own software

It's really sad honestly, there's so many alternatives to WinRAR and no one dares uses them.

Because winrar let’s you use it for free, it’s basically the best tactic to let your software stick.

[–] kattenluik@feddit.nl 8 points 8 months ago

Every other worthwhile one is also free and does not prompt you for purchase.

[–] c_ezra_m@lemm.ee 6 points 8 months ago

If you don't pay for WinRAR, the only thing it will do is show up notices to buy it. This is intentional, meant to prevent piracy. So it's more like a donation rather than a purchase.

I didn't know about 7z, but I had been using WinRAR for years and I was in a position to contribute.
