The people who took care of me were genuinely of God. I suppose YMMV depending if you live in a sane country or not. We do live in the single most atheist country on the planet though, so I guess it's not globally representative...

Underneath the thin facade of being a charitable organization, they're really a disgusting Protestant sect of Christianity who loath homosexuality and have a fair share of controversies. While they have acted shady pertaining to American labor legislation, they operate globally and they do not deny aid to those in need. There isn't a checklist of criteria you have to meet in order for the Salvation Army to help you.
