Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

why hasn't canonical embraced, extinguish and extended microsoft?? (lemmy.world)

if microsoft is loving linux and open source just to extinguish it, then why doesn't canonical or other linux company do the same but for all microsoft services?? something like this:

canonical creates an operating system that works with windows and is linux too
a few years after integrate proprietary components and deprecate all the open source components
make the requirements for installing said operating system huge and not available for anyone
abandon it... and windows gets abandoned too

im sorry, i dont dislike microsoft but if canonical wanted to, they could do that!!
