Did it have to be Ubisoft? Couldn't literally any other publisher pick this up?

The studio behind Driver (Reflections Interactive) and the series's licensing rights have been purchased by Ubisoft in 2006

I mean, Ubisoft has been publishing the series for at least 14 years. It's pretty solidly theirs. They'd have to willingly give it up.

Great, so we can enjoy it for a couple of years before they turn the servers off

Part of me feels like they're only saying this to try to prevent a fan-made style of the game from sprouting up due to lack of development on the IP, that being said I haven't followed one of their games since PS1, so not sure how well their fanbase is

It's already done, Driver Syndicate is a fan made driver game. There's been also a fan made PC port of Driver 2 even (I held the WR for the speedrun of that game for a bit even)

Best part is it doesn't have microtransactions or kernel anti-cheat like what Ubisoft will certainly stick onto the new Driver game either.

Driver San Francisco had some really great vehicle dynamics. I always felt that GTA could learn a lot in this area.

@ssm is 'actively working' on finding more ways to never hear anything relating to ubisoft ever again

Live service, paid car passes, beautiful open world but inexplicable gameplay choices.

First level is the tutorial level so many people had trouble with, in the parking garage!
