I liked Outcast a lot back then, but I don't really think open-world when I think about it.

The way I remember it, only one area was big enough to be really called "open", and most of it was made of paddy fields.

Interesting, I have fond memories of playing the original, at the time it was pretty graphically advanced. Going back to it now though, it looks pretty primitive, but at the time it was advanced. I remember my Dad and I both getting really into it and playing it for weeks until we finished it.
