I think this could be prevented... if there were actually any halfway serious consequences for those responsible.

Yes, but that would mean that there would need to be serious consequences for insurrection across the board. Even for rich republicans. And that would mean consequences for rich people.

The US has to choose between capitalism and democracy again. It has so far chosen capitalism at every turn since Nixon.
