That article was charming! I like that guy, and I like his gaming ethos. Play what you like, there is no "best game," and you can find things to like in a lot of games.

I had this, but I remember not really getting it at the time and not giving it a fair shot. Maybe it's time to go back.

I was hyped for the game and recall liking the game when I played it. I also got really stuck at one point because I didnt really make good use of my upgrades, so my playthrough ended up with me just meleeing everything because I felt the magic was so weak. Eventually I gave up

Never played Quest 64, but I can appreciate someone taking the time and effort to try and meme a game they love back into relevance.

I remember renting this game a few times when I was around 8 or 9 and having no clue what I was doing but still enjoying it. I cannot remember the gameplay at all though, I’ll have to check YouTube to see if it’ll bring back any memories.

One game that has for whatever reason stuck around with me even though it was never really popular is Illusion of Gaia for SNES. The story and music alone really blew my mind when I was young and I continued to replay it every 5 or so years throughout my life.

Great story but Substack is a Nazi bar

[–] Potatos_are_not_friends@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Tell me more.

There's some weird vibes about substack that I can't pinpoint.

Not OP but Substack has been pretty explicit that they will not be removing fascist/nazi accounts. I suspect the comment you’re replying to was referring to the story about how if you don’t kick the well-mannered “reasonable” nazis out of the bar the instant they show up, you quickly and inevitably discover that your bar is a nazi bar.

Edited for clarity.

He's just crying that substack doesn't care what people are writing about.

My friends had quest 64 when we were kids, I had always wanted to play it. Maybe I should pick it up and give er a go

While I did like Quest 64 as a kid, it has massive issues, even compared to the unfinished and buggy state of modern gaming releases.

Here's an idea for a remake. Quest 64 2, 20% more finished than the original release.

I remember this game being sold as a successor to Mystic Quest, and so I wondered why people complained about it not being as involved as a main series Final Fantasy. Mystic Quest was like an RPG made for people who weren't familiar with RPGs as sort of an easy introduction to the concept. Quest 64 felt very much in line with that idea, and it did it extremely well. IMO, it was actually more fun than Mystic Quest because it also still has an engaging story while Mystic Quest definitely feels and reads like an extra long tutorial.

I rented Quest 64 back in the day but never beat or bought it. From that rental my impression was that it had some good ideas but need a lot more polish, add in the N64 price tag (especially since I could run burned CDs on my PlayStation at that point) and it was banished into the realm of "Maybe if I see it on sale".

Quest: Brian's Journey (the Gameboy Version of this game) was one of my first RPGs. I loved it as a kid.

This game had a lot of potential to be really good. I think its still got the framework for it, but could stand to use a mod to rebalance the magic and item drops to make the game a bit easier and less unbalanced.

[–] chameleon@kbin.social 6 points 10 months ago

Quest 64 French Vanilla more or less is that mod. Not totally sure what I think of it though. It's a huge improvement over the game's mechanics, but this is also one of those games where all the weird balancing quirks are part of the game's charm.

Great article! I have vivid memories of renting this from Hollywood Video (a southern california blockbuster equivalent), getting so confused, and giving up on it very quickly.

[–] JungleJim@sh.itjust.works 8 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Topic-adjacent but Hollywood Video was national. I visited one in northern Virginia and in Florida as a kid.

[–] 4am@lemm.ee 3 points 10 months ago

A lot of the Blockbusters in my area became Hollywood Video at one point, although that didn’t last long either

[–] newtraditionalists@kbin.social 1 points 10 months ago

Nice! I wasn't sure so I just mentioned it. Never seen memes about it the way I have with blockbuster haha

[–] DerisionConsulting@lemmy.ca 3 points 10 months ago

We had those in Canada too
