The process is the punishment.

There's a large incentive to show that you're punishing somebody who refuses to take a plea deal.

The plea deal system in the US courts is a form of corruption.

Why? They do it all the time. And sell it off before trial concludes so even if you win, good luck getting it back.

The police are a legal street gang in the US.
