From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Awesome to see Omarchy getting more visibility! Fireship’s vid spreading the Linux desktop to 500k+ viewers is huge!

I don't use this distro myself, but I still cheer for anything that helps motivate Windows users to make the switch.

I watched the video. It's good to see Linux getting more attention. This and Gamers Nexus' video.

I'm so fucking sick of this shit called omarchy. It's literally everywhere related to Linux: in my mastodon feed, in my Lemmy feed, on YouTube! Someone is pushing it like a corporate product and I hate it. Plus, it's created and pushed by a fascist. Fuck that too!

I'm just now hearing about it, but I believe you.

So many pieces of shit on these forums come here just to shill garbage.

MX Linux had it a few years back, then Garuda, now it looks like omarchy is the distro that "popped up out of nowhere" and magically everyone is talking about it.

Hell yes. And every time I see it pop up, these points come up, usually a bunch of times. So people know this shit is trouble, and it’s still blowing up.

Calm like a bomb, he is

I’m of mixed views about this. Omarchy is popular purely because of DHH. I don’t see anything of benefit beyond the notoriety of a famous dev.

There’s also some dissenting opinion about DHH in general that taints the project: https://drewdevault.com/2025/09/24/2025-09-24-Cloudflare-and-fascists.html

Being based on hyprland also has some potential social issues.

I don’t get why cloudflare didn’t donate to arch instead.

Thanks for making me aware of the authors' blatant fascism.

I agree. This whole project deserves a good bit of skepticism, on political, social, and technical grounds.

at least it wasn't "omakase", though i suspect omarchy is a derivative of that word. dhh was insufferable during the rails peak and he seems to still be today.

Fuuuuck... wtf. Anyone know an alternative?
