Oh boy, copyright holders are about to learn about the Streisand effect

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

isnt this kind of good thing? The original website is the best for searching stuff from there and by doing this, it takes off some heat from the website

[–] tyranical_typhon@lemmings.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's a bad thing because people are less likely to come across it at all.

We should stop being afraid to fight because we think our oppressors will fight back.

That's bitch-made, punk-ass behavior.

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

Strong community is how we deal with this, not by relying on corporations' tools. People should be guided to communities first, so they can also get information how to stay safe themselves.

I'm surprised that someone that would use Anna's Archive, would use Google as their search engine.

[–] weirdo_from_space@sh.itjust.works 69 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Or use a search engine to access it in general. Anna's Archive itself is a search engine, it's better to just bookmark it and search for stuff directly from there.

Is it on a stable website, or does it change sometimes? And what's the address?

[–] kossa@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Is stable for me for a long time already. Maybe you need to switch DNS, as some ISPs have a DNS block. But one should switch DNS regardless.

This was linked in like the first sentence of the article, and it has an up-to-date list of the current URLs.

[–] lemming@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Thanks, it would never occur to me to look for it on Wikipedia.

It's been communal tradition ever since ThePirateBay got into these "DNS wars" and "Domain switching". In the end, TPB kind of faded out. But same practice goes for many pirate sites. That's the point :) so, be aware it's a great way to find URLs for these o7

I've seen a lot of very tech savvy people still using google and chrome to this day. It's the top search engine. The majority of people use it, including pirates.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

Sometimes I'm just lazy. Don't use chrome but google as a search engine since it's the default and sometimes I can't be bothered to change it.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

I usually use ddg but sometimes it can't find things in non-English languages whereas google has the results I'm looking for.

[–] sidebro@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 days ago

They probably don't, tbh. Question is if this will even affect the traffic in any way.

[–] masquenox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 days ago

If I want to find a pdf, whether it be a book, comic or research paper, I use Yandex - Google has been unusable in that way for a long time now.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

I used to find books and papers by googling the title and clicking on results. It's not that crazy.

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 73 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well that's a funny coincidence, I've removed Google URLs and services from all my devices and browsers.

[–] cassandrafatigue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 45 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Waiting to see who grapheneOS is working with next year and what models, then completely and finally degoogling my life.

[–] Teppichbrand@feddit.org 8 points 2 days ago

You don't have to wait, start it now! LineageOS with MicroG is a fine Android OS without Google. It's supported on many devices.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 40 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Everyone knows Ducks are the best for sailing the waters! (noai.duckduckgo.com) lol

[–] hexagonwin@lemmy.sdf.org 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

yandex is better, ddg is just bing

[–] hodgepodgin@lemmy.zip 26 points 2 days ago (3 children)

isn’t yandex Russian owned?

Yes, and while it may give you results that you won't find in Western search engines, it's still controlled by the state in what it puts out.

[–] cmnybo@discuss.tchncs.de 34 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yes, that's why they don't care about copyrighted content outside of Russia.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago

DDG for everyday use, Yandex for media.

[–] hexagonwin@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 2 days ago

it is. it also doesnt work well with js disabled and shows many captchas which absolutely sucks. the search results are pretty good tho.

[–] Comrade_Spood@quokk.au 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Good thing I use Startpage

[–] tyranical_typhon@lemmings.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Pretty sure startpage shows the same results as google.

Mojeek is a search engine that prides itself on lack of censorship, but it can be hard to find things there as well.

Rude of them
