Today's game is Subnautica. After hearing the news about Krafton i was really disappointed. This was a big game to me when i was younger, and i've kind of been trying to figure out how to play this without budging on my morals. The answer seems kind of obvious, but it was hard to pull off for me for some reason.

Anyways, i just wanted to make sure everything worked, yknow? So i just loaded up a creative save and made a little base for 40 Minutes. The one above is the "Bedroom" i made. I'm a big fan of water and so i put lots of windows in.

I also built a observation sphere to just watch from. The screenshot doesn't really capture it, but the view was gorgeous. Almost pitch blackness with glowing things in the sea, it was really pretty. I like seeing the pretty side of this game highlighted. I always hear from friends about how scary this game is, but also sometimes i feel it can be beautiful.

I also built this central living quarters with a fish tank. I had trouble getting the fish in until i realized i had to actually build a door to get in, so that was an embarrassing struggle.

By the point i was finished it was already getting late, so i decided to relax before my new years plans (Wii Sports, as is my tradition). I just sat in the dome and chilled, while listening to the soundtrack and other music. It was a chill experience. It's a shame i won't get to experience it with the sequel.

I don't want to end off on a sour note about something negative, so i just want to wish everyone a Happy New Year! It's been crazy to think I've made it this far in my screenshots. Even if this isn't the Second Year mark, i'm thankful to have gotten to do these, it's a blast getting to play these games and sharing them with others.

This is one of my favourite games ever. One of those I wish I could erase from my memory so I could play it for the first time again.

Also very disappointed about all the bullshit with the sequel and the devs.

I played a hardcore mod of the game and it was like playing the game for the first time again, give it a shot!

[–] sirimeow@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Hmm, I'll check it out. Thanks for the recommendation

[–] nforminvasion@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Try it with mods again. But you may have to downgrade the game to the previous major version as a lot of the best mods aren't updated anymore.

[–] sirimeow@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Oh I have. I've still played it a lot more, it's just that first playthrough was such a special experience

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I remember watching the development. It’s sad seeing what happened to it. I was really excited for the sequel too because of the multiplayer

I haven't kept up with the news. What's the issue?

[–] Armok_the_bunny@lemmy.world 21 points 3 weeks ago

Krafton fired the creators to deny them a million-ish dollar bonus that was promised to them, then made a whole bunch of accusations against the creators to try to shift the blame.

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

capitalists came in and do what they do best, fired everyone to cut costs

[–] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

I randomly downloaded Subnautica when it was free on Epic for a bit and it became one of the best games I've ever experienced, it's equally peaceful and scary and I had a lot of fun exploring the biomes and finding Easter eggs and getting grabbed by big red lol. Sad what happened with the company that made it, I didn't like subzero as much, hopefully someday I come across another game that hooks me like this game did

[–] httperror418@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Try planet crafter, similar feel for the bases, but what a game (I've been hooked since I started)

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I think Planet Crafter has been on my wishlist. I didn’t know it’s like subnautica’s bases though. I’ll have too check it out!

[–] httperror418@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

The base building is loads of fun, fair warning, consider "height" when building. I didn't and learned the hard way 🤣

The base building is where I've sunk most my time, and then automation later on just became a bunch of fun (I completed one planet and then started on another for the dlc)

[–] Cavemanfreak@programming.dev 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Great game! I do have to mess with the settings since I think it's way too grindy otherwise, but that's just another plus for the game. Haven't played the DLCs yet though...

[–] httperror418@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

I've found it pretty reasonable compared to most games for the grind (if you upgrade the generators etc and then get automation up late game it's been a blast)

Heard Subnautica has a good VR mod, so that definitely puts it on my list. The list is huge though. Maybe sometime this year...

[–] Suck_on_my_Presence@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I tried the VR mod a year or two ago and it was pretty good except for the way that the character moves does not compute to the way normal people move, so it was making me suuuper sick. The strafing in particular was bad.

[–] apprehensively_human@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

Playing in VR made me realize how poorly pancake mode gives you a sense of scale. Everything is subnautica is absolutely massive. Peepers' eyes are the size of dinner plates

[–] excursion22@piefed.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

I replayed Subnautica in VR with the mentioned mod not too long ago. It's an environment that's perfect for VR and really puts the scale of things in perspective. I found some of the leviathans were a little janky in their movement sometimes, but they were still quite terrifying.

[–] jagermo@feddit.org 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Great game. That first dive from the capsule, amazing

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 2 points 3 weeks ago

I'll always remember the first minute or so. Just uncomparable to anything else

[–] CharlesReed@fedia.io 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Happy New Year! I do love Subnautica myself, and I'm actually working on a building/creative playthrough rn with the large rooms that I've never used before, for fun (so much titanium!). And if nothing else, I'm assuming you bought the game before the whole... whatever is going on right now with all that. You are clear to enjoy.

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I ended up getting it through other means I’m not sure I’m allowed to mention (though I own an Xbox copy too), but a friend who checks these had a Steam Key from a while ago I guess that he just forgot to use it, so I guess I got a moral and legal copy. It’s a shame about Below Zero, I doubt I could pull luck like that again.

I hope the base building goes well! It’s definitely a therapeutic experience just sitting back and building

I wish my wife could play subnautica with me, as she likes swimming around and stuff but isn't really "good" at video games, since she never played one until adulthood.

In Minecraft it's mostly me doing the work while she does farming stuff. I once came back from a deep mining trip to see a once-empty field filled to the maximum with cows. We had a nice library afterward though.

I still haven't beaten subnautica without cheating or taking shortcuts. Heck when I first downloaded it, it didn't even have an ending yet.

9.3/10, it's fun

[–] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

That’s how my girlfriend is too lol. I’m kind of the one handling all the mechanical stuff when we play while she handles everything non too mechanical. I think she could figure it out if she set her mind to it, but I’m more than happy to help her out.

For beating the game, I’m not sure I could beat it to begin with. I think I’d get sidetracked and lose track of the story, even though I have a feeling it’s not too long

I wish my wife could play subnautica with me

Well she's too busy taking care of young Molly to be able to make the time. Maybe have Worf babysit?

[–] AFallingAnvil@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

Happy new year! Looking forward to seeing what you get up to this year :)

I heard some great things about the game.

Tried it out and didn’t see a point. Everything in the ocean is dangerous and you had no objectives.

So you could just stay on your ship forever.

I like to think I won the game that way

Edit: seems like people didn’t like my attempted to be funny comment about the game unfortunately not being my style. IMO that’s what we should have in gaming though, people going out of their comfort zone and trying many genres. I doubted I would like hades much but it became one of my all time favourites.

[–] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

The point is to escape the planet. Its one of the scariest adventure games I've played before, super cool. Ive heard some people have gotten over underwater fears playing it too because of how strong the emotional reaction can be.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yes that's me !!!

[–] who@feddit.org 6 points 3 weeks ago

you had no objectives.

So you could just stay on your ship forever.

Are you sure you haven't inverted the cause/effect relationship here? ;)

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 4 points 3 weeks ago

Saw a speedrun of it during one of the gdqs. Game takes a sharp left turn halfway through and gets a narrative.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You can't, if you do so you starve

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There was no hunger meter when I played, maybe that’s due to the difficulty setting?

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 1 points 3 weeks ago

ah, hmmm... can't remember but that might be it. It's at least an incentive to survive

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 2 points 3 weeks ago

Happy new year. Loved Subnautica, it helped me get past my thalassophobia. I also got into freediving at roughly the same time (around 2017 if my memory serves right). Fantastic experience, one of the most impactful in my gaming journey. Have a good one
