Hi everyone! Yesterday I was checking the demo of Acrolyte, a pixel art metroidvania. The think I liked the most was the controls scheme, it was like the old game Abuse, keyboard for movement and mouse for aiming. So my question is, do you know any other modern (or not as modern) games that are similar? As in side scroller where you aim with the mouse. Doesn't matter if it is 2D, 2.5D or pixel art.

Cheers!

Noita and good old Soldat come to mind

Was gonna say Noita, great game but unforgiving as fuck!

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Oh, i didn't realize Noita had mouse aiming and it has been in my wishlist forever. Also love the tiny characters of Soldat. Many thanks!

The title made me think you were looking for stuff like QWOP.

Way back I played a bit of A.R.E.S: Extinction Agenda (https://store.steampowered.com/app/92300/ARES_Extinction_Agenda/) - it's a bit of a score attack game, but controls pretty similarly to Abuse.

If purely multiplayer game is your thing, Teeworlds (https://store.steampowered.com/app/380840/Teeworlds/ , https://teeworlds.com/) controls just like Abuse. It's about cure orb-shaped creatures duking it out. It's free, btw.

Definitely looks like was i looking for, will be checking it, thanks!

Oh, also: Rochard - if you can get it anywhere, it is pretty dope. It's a bit of a mix of action & puzzle platformer but with Abuse-like controls. It was pulled from steam years ago, dunno if it's available on consoles still.

I've played it long ago. Doesn't it end on a cliffhanger of sort? Or am I confusing it with something else?

I kinda remember being annoyed with the state the plot was left in.

[–] Malix@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 month ago

honestly, can't remember the plot at all, it's been about 3 eternities since I've played it. I do recall liking the gameplay tho. :P

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Oh, it seems that is delisted on Steam. Will try to find it elsewhere. Thanks!

This is a bit different, but Mari0 has this control scheme. It's Super Mario Bros with a portal gun. There's also a lot of custom levels

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Oh, wow, saw a video, that looks crazy, not sure if it's my thing but it certainly fits what I was asking for, thanks!

I haven't played it in a while (a decade, even), so I may be mistaken, but I know of Ghost 1.0.

(it's definitely not "modern" though)

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Yes, it looks promising, and it doesn't looks that old. Thank you!

I've recently played Carrion and although you're controlling the monster there it felt very much like Abuse to me. Apart from mouse and keyboard controls, it has very similar art style and art direction with very nice "old school" pixel art. Very mich recommended.

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

You are right, played that game a while ago, really a great game, thanks!

I think that's a twin stick shooter, even if aiming is with the mouse. I was referring to side scrollers. Thank you anyway :)

[–] Gonzako@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Have ya given the worms games a try?

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Yup, although las time I played was like 30 years ago or so. Lotta fun! I would like to try one of the new one but don't know where to start.

[–] Deconceptualist@leminal.space 2 points 1 month ago

Terraria? That could keep you engrossed for a good hundred+ hours 🙂

[–] Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Basically twin stick shooters

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Yes I was referring more to side scrollers rather than top down or twin sticks. Thank you anyway :)

I've been playing DEADBOLT since the demo came out on GameJolt in 2015. Probably my favorite game with a control scheme like that, and it's made by the original devs of Risk of Rain.

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh, nice! Looks like Hotline Miami meets Bonanza Bros. Will definitely be checking it out, thanks!

[–] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 month ago

A fellow Bonanza Bros. enjoyer? Yeah, you're definitely going to like DEADBOLT.

I know of some flash/browser games if you're okay with them and know how to safely play them but otherwise, I know I've definitely played a lot of games like this but I'm struggling to remember them.

I haven't played the steam version yet but I know that The Last Stand: Union City is pretty good. It was released on Steam in the Legacy Collection It plays almost like a 2D version of Fallout 3/NV but in a modern setting. I've personally been looking for more games like this but I have yet to find any.

I know it might not be what you are looking for but I know that Terraria plays like this. It starts with melee weapons but you can get ranged weapons and there is a lot of them.

If you are okay with top-down shooters, I'm also aware of a game called Empty Clip.

I'm also aware of some adult games but I don't know if I can post those here.

Shootas Blood and Teef. A 40k themed side scrolling shooter with very heavy stylized graphics. If you like 40k it's a good insight in how orks see themselves. If you don't like 40k it's still a mechanically solid game and it doesn't really have the same grimdarkness that is common in 40k games.

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

It looks exactly what I'm looking for plus it looks lot of fun. Thank you!
