I'm a developer working on a game similar to Geoguessr (street view location guessing game), but using images sourced from Wikimedia. The aim is to make it more fun by removing the meta clues in Geoguessr that people use to find locations, for example some players have memorized what street view cars or picture quality was used in certain places. For me, this ruins the fun of the game as it becomes less about knowledge of geography and more about memorizing useless information. So that's why I made Where.

You can try it out at: https://where.hurn.dev/

You can guess locations in single player, or play a duel with others. All images and hand-picked, and there are currently around 5000. I'm constantly adding new images every day, the goal is to have at least 100 thousand images for replayability. Occasionally some images that aren't good for guessing slip through the net, so please press the report button and i'll remove them.

Still very early stages so please let me know if you encounter any bugs!

I apologize if this post comes across as self-promotion. This game is completely free, just a side project that I would love to get people's opinions on. I gain nothing other than valuable feedback from people playing it.

If you do check it out, please let me know if you like it have have any feedback. Cheers!

Thanks, just had my ass handed to me by you :D

It's fun, maybe make sure to feature articles related to the Wiki resources used so that my random guesses can result in some learning?

Some pictures are very hard (obviously), maybe find a way to have different "levels"?

To me, it would also be fun with more trivia oriented photos (landmarks, famous things in museums) but that would of course move away from the geography theme a bit.

I've been enjoying https://whentaken.com/game which is in a similar vein.

This is really quite engaging! I'm having way more fun with this than geoguessr to be honest. I find it more fun because of the limited info, which I didn't expect. I'm also having more luck with this than geoguessr, surprisingly, hahaha. Keep up the good work!

Having some performance issues due to the traffic. Working on a fix ASAP

Edit: Found the issue, should be fixed!

Interesting. The inability to pan and walk around makes it very different. I liked "walking" around in geoguesser until I found a landmark or something, but I never played competitively or obsessively.

Nice game. I'm very bad at it, but it's fun anyway. Sometimes images take minutes to load and I ran into two fetch image errors. Refreshed the page and now everything loads fast.

I've learned that I am really bad at this game.

Thanks for sharing!

Very nice game, quite hard and some images i'm guessing the other side of the world, but I don't want to blame the images about it.
