Hello fellow pirates 👋
I'm sick of Audible and it's buggy app. Due to their excessive a/b testing the app stops working every second night. So I setup a selfhosted audiobookshelf instance.

However, I need my audiobooks to fall asleep and I don't want to listen to the same books again and again, so I need a new source. Do you have any recommendations? In best case in German language, in worst case in English.

Thank you in advance! ☺️

Your local library can be an awesome source for audiobooks. And don't forget to check your local thrift stores and flohmärkte once in a while, many audiobooks for 1 - 2 €, also many recent ones... Rip it, put it on your audiobookshelf, it is very easy and fast for most audiobooks.

Audiobookbay

I also found another source myself: The library. Just found out our village has one. It has like 150 audio books on cd. As it's only open for 2 days a week I have to wait a bit. But then I may visit them with my notebook and an external cd drive and make some…backups 😉

Usenet is still one of the best sources when it comes to german media.

Also audiobooks.

I've never used Usenet before. So, thanks for the guide! 😊

Checkout https://getlibation.com/ so you can backup your Audible books too.

Good hint! I already did so. But if anybody reading this who has an Audible account: Use this tool; it's awesome!

I feel like it's only a matter of time until Amazon kills this too after they locked down Kindle dedrm.

When the time comes I guess I will have to find a better way to get audiobooks than signing up for 1€/month Audible trial twice a year.

Probably. Libation uses the auth key from the Audible iPhone app. However: Apps have to have their secret hard coded. They can only rotate it. YouTube tries this too. But one update later yt-dlp works again. So I guess this is a fight Amazon can't win.

There are many fairy tales. I loved to hear these as child. Thanks for sharing!

For English audiobooks I use audiobookbay, I think you can find something in other languages too

Thanks for the tip! There are indeed a lot of german ones 👌

For small values of "a lot". I am in the same boat, there are not many German audio books.

There are some great resources being posted, but I would like to offer a different one. MyAnonaMouse is a private tracker just for books and book adjacent things (comics, audiobooks, even radio shows) and at least at the time I was looking was said to be the best spot. It wasn't hard to get in, the rules are VERY lenient and it's quite easy to build up a large ratio with their points. As long as you are comfortable with using torrents and are able to leave them running to share the love with others I have yet to find a book unavailable. Feel free to ask about MaM if you have any questions.

I'm not that into torrents, but i'll undust my qBittorrent and give it a try! Thanks!

Try YouTube. It's surprising how much stuff ends up there and doesn't get deleted. And you can easily download the stuff with yt-dlp.

[–] Chaser@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Wow. You're right. Just searched for "Terry Pratchett" and got a playlist with 40+ books. Btw: yt-dlp also supports youtube music links. Including albums or even artists 😉 just in case you want to dump spotify in favor of navidrome

Well, I've listened to audiobooks on Spotify (and Tidal) for a while, but that's not piracy. You could try "hoerbuch" followed by the top-level domain of the United States. And the local library here has several shelves filled with audiobooks. I might have ripped a few to listen to them on modern devices...

Thanks! The theme makes me quite nostalgic. Reminds me of good old movie blog 😉
