Neat project, but

we set an intention to have a healthy relationship with technology in our home.

Followed by photos of these schedule-reminder screens all over both homes.

I wish I had his hobby money. Currently my budget for this year is three sea shells I found on my neighbors yard and a first gen raspberry pi I stole ten years ago.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 29 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How do you use the three seashells?

[–] crank0271@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You may want to wash them first...

[–] partofthevoice@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

I shower with them…

[–] GhostlyPixel@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

I think I saw a tutorial on how to run doom on the three seashells, at least there’s that

[–] sauerkrautsaul@lemmus.org 6 points 1 day ago

return both the stolen sea shells and raspberry pi and you will avoid prison

That 32" display is priced as "ask for a quote", lol.

[–] just_another_person@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It's something like $2k. Pretty insane for a project like this. You can just get the actual e-ink panels pretty cheap, but then you need to build a driver for it. Not simple.

I like the project, but it seems like as soon as buddy got access to real-time e-ink he just never looked back.

As well, I get the UI appeal of negative space, but my god it costs a fortune in e-ink.

As everyone is noting here, this project shows a pattern of "money is no object" in every decision made.

That doesn't mean it has to be, though. My gut tells me you could slash the cost in (at least) half while retaining like 90% of the utility.

Yeah, I just think this is an insane spend for most people.

I much more affordable option, though smaller, are these TRMNL displays: https://trmnl.com/

Yeah, I know how crazy expensive e-ink is, so I was curious what this dude paid. Dropping 2k on this means you have a lot of cash lying around.

The pain I felt when I cracked my 12” display still echoes in my mind.

Oof. That hurts just hearing about it.

This is what I dislike about yhese types of dashboard projects. The eink is too costly

[–] swicano@programming.dev 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The way eink display prices scale is insane. You can get a 13 inch one for like 200, but any bigger than that it skyrockets. Must be that they still struggle to get good display yields across that large of an area, defect rates or something.

but its nice ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

[–] sbv@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

It's so grey.

2 days later we would be putting post it bites and pieces of paper up.

Way to scheduled out and way too annoying to have to deal with everything being electronic. But everyone is different.

Thanks for posting this. I've been wanting an e paper display for b&w photos since long. Only thing that always popped up was a very expensive thing with an art subscription.

[–] dafalcon@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

super nice! Not something I can attempt but its great to see how you did it!

[–] ElHijoDelPilote@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

This is Great. Thanks for the detailed Story of your achievements. I would be greatly interested in a software app or even a full solution. Ever thought of starting a kickstarter? I would be a happy (alpha or) beta user

I just saw a thousand dollar lora device and now this. I have this kind of money and even i think this is a hard no based on price alone.
