The Rules

Posts must be:

  1. Links to news stories from...

  4. ...would make people who see the headline think, “That has got to be a story from The Onion, America’s Finest News Source.”

Please also avoid duplicates.

Comments and post content must abide by the server rules for Lemmy.world and generally abstain from trollish, bigoted, ableist, or otherwise disruptive behavior that makes this community less fun for everyone.

If I was The Onion, I would not have announced this. I would have slowly started slipping normal sane reporting into the site until it was fully converted. I’m guessing those visitors probably haven’t seen truthful news in awhile.

theonion.info had all you need to know.

Such is the InfoWars I envision: An infinite virtual surface teeming with ads. Not just ads, but scams! Not just scams, but lies with no object, free radical misinformation, sentences and images so poorly thought out that they are unhealthy even to view for just a few seconds. The InfoWars of old was only the prototype for the hell I know we can build together: A digital platform where, every day, visitors sacrifice themselves at altars of delusion and misery, their minds fully disintegrating on contact.

😆

The fact this deal was ever able to be blocked in the first place is indisputable proof that the law has always been on the side of the fascists.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 9 points 8 hours ago

Hoping they'll do a series on all the times alex jones said god talks to him and tells him what time it is.

If the licensing agreement receives court approval, The Onion plans to turn Infowars into a comedy site satirizing its conspiratorial origins, and comedian Tim Heidecker has been hired as creative director.

This brings me so much joy.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 34 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I think Tim is going to do a Great Job.

My apologies for the downvote. The article used their instead of there and it’s quite a terrible website in terms of ads. Not a lot of substance to the article I regret my click.

[–] thethunderwolf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

do you seriously not use an adblocker?

[–] Slashme@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

Adblockers don't fix bad grammar or add substance to articles.

[–] antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Tradeoff of using a phone with a Lemmy app.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

You might be able to go into the settings and set it to use your default browser instead of using their own.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 5 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (3 children)

Nope.. there's no setting for that in Voyager. I've been down this path before, and someone sent a screenshot showing that option but it seems to only exist on the IOS lemmy build, not Android

Edit: I meant voyager, not lemmy

Edit2: the option is missing from the PWA version of voyager - install the play store Android app instead.

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

It's in voyager for Android. I don't think I could survive life without my default browser.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 3 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

Can you tell me where that setting is in voyager, because I've just been through the settings and I don't see it.

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Sure. It's under general->other

Screenshot:

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (2 children)

Uh.. that's not what I see ? I have two options missing:

Voyager 2.45.1

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

Well that's weird. I may have turned on advanced settings somewhere. I'll have a look.

Edit: what version are you on?

I'm on 2.45.1 but I've had that functionality a long time.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 5 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I figured it out. I had the webapp (pwa) version installed from the voyager website, which runs within your browser but otherwise looks identical

I've now installed the voyager Android app from the play store and the missing options now show up

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 5 points 7 hours ago

Ah sweet. Glad you're sorted! What a difference it makes.

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

Replying separately so you get the notification. Went through all the settings and I don't see any reason for yours to be different.

The only thing I can think of is that I installed mine from f-droid instead of the play store.

Other than that I'm stumped.

[–] MousePotatoDoesStuff@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Which app are you using? I got Connect to link to Vivaldi.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Sorry I meant voyager, not lemmy in general

It's okay. Thanks for clarifying!

Does this fit for NotTheOnion? It specifically is The Onion. Not complaining or anything, just had the thought.

[–] quips@slrpnk.net 26 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

God its onionception. Its both not an onion headline but yet is also an onion headline at the same time.

And it's got layers... like an onion.

[–] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 11 points 11 hours ago

I guess that means we're done?

Guy taking down elaborate folding chair and leaving

[–] nkat2112@sh.itjust.works 167 points 19 hours ago

The Onion will also sell Infowars merchandise and share the proceeds with the Sandy Hook families.

I'm grateful to The Onion for many reasons throughout the recent decades. And it seems I have a new reason to add to the list.

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 65 points 17 hours ago (14 children)

This is quite a paradox. It's a true story, not satire, meaning that it does belong on /c/nottheonion; and I would indeed look at the headline and think "That has got to be a story from The Onion, America's Finest News Source." But it's definitely about the satire newspaper and website The Onion, which is explicitly what this community is not about. It says so in the name!

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 51 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

We don't have a community called "quantum superposition of onion", so this will have to do

Well you can also pronounce the name of the community as "not the onion" as in "oh no its the onion!"

I subscribed (actual money) to the Onion when the original deal went down. Glad I continue to do so, they do good work.

[–] treesapx@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

Same here! And got one for a family member as well. The original news gave me my first bit of hope after the election.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 80 points 19 hours ago (5 children)

Alex Jones has not commented on the Onion’s new plan to take over Infowars.

Heh

[–] TheGiantKorean@lemmy.today 19 points 15 hours ago (5 children)

How long do you think it'll take the people who visit the site to realize it's satire now? If ever?

license the Infowars website and its associated intellectual property from Gregory Milligan, who was appointed by a bankruptcy court to manage the website, for $1,800 a month

So the money goes to the victims, right?

and Jones could appeal any ruling

nooooooooo!
