Welcome to the largest gaming community on Lemmy! Discussion for all kinds of games. Video games, tabletop games, card games etc.

Rules

1. Submissions have to be related to games

Video games, tabletop, or otherwise. Posts not related to games will be deleted.

This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.

We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.

3. No excessive self-promotion

Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history.

This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.

4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts

This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you're submitting before posting to see if it's already been posted.

We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW

Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed.

No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don't share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.

We don't want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

This game would be played on GitHub. One person would make a list of some food items, one would make list of some shopping articles, one would make a list of restaurants, and one would make a list of places worth sightseeing. These would be uploaded as a repository in GitHub. And then we shall collaborate.

Stop using Github, use Codeberg instead

Does codeberg give us enough freedom to experiment ? I mean when l know nothing ??

[–] rtxn@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If all you need is a git server, then Codeberg is as good as Github. Better if you consider uptime and reliability.

GitHub doesn't really bother what you do with your account.

You mean l can play with my codeberg account ?

[–] november@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] LoveEspresso@cafe.coffee-break.cc 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No l haven't. But doesn't codeberg have a very clear cut set of rules regarding how you use it ?

[–] november@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah: Don't do anything illegal, don't make massive private repositories, other common-sense stuff like that.

[–] LoveEspresso@cafe.coffee-break.cc 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It's not going to be illegal and the repositories are going to be public. But instead of serious coding work, it would be playing - like kids do. Do you get what I mean ? Codeberg allows that ??

[–] november@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago

Yes, why wouldn't it?

First, read the actual ToS. That will spell it out.

Second, even if they kick you off the platform, what's the loss? Git doesn't depend on a single server by design. If you have to switch to a different provider, all you have to do is set up an empty repository on the new platform, change the local repository's remote, and push. If the goal is to learn how to use git, then managing the remotes should be a part of it.

They insist on license. But what license could there possibly be for a game ?

Why in git, and why on GitHub?

Why not in Lemmy comments?

[–] LoveEspresso@cafe.coffee-break.cc 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The aim is understand how git works.

With Microsoft Copilot everything is PVE

Microsoft Copilot is Github's AI helper.

Getting an AI to work properly in some Git Repos is like struggling against the entire world to get it functioning without screaming like a banshee.

Goal is to practise how git works.

I'm "game"!

In that regard, is it just Github specifically you wish to learn? Or is it about repos in general?

Github is one name in many who have the same type of service. If you want to train on Github specifically, thats cool. But others like GitLab, Bitbucket, Codeberg exist that function similarly or just the same.

If you want to learn how to make pages, group contribute, to practice using GIT (the tool), etc, you can use any service not just Github. :)

What more do you wish to accomplish?

[–] LoveEspresso@cafe.coffee-break.cc 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Basically to use git as a tool and to collaborate in projects. But GitHub gives much more freedom regarding what you do in your account.

I don't know anything about bitbucket. GitLab is not for me.

[–] Kojichan@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Fair enough. :)

Thank you for listening to the suggestions, despite them not working quite right for your current wishes.

Once you get used to Github and what it has to offer, you can get a better idea of how things work!
