Hey listen! I don't know how to feel about this look. I'm happy about the Remake, because it will be realized in full 3D, without the early technical limitations of Nintendo 64. But I guess we need to see this in action in the game, rather than this quick few seconds at non gameplay sequence. Will this be a re-imagining like Final Fantasy 7 Remake was? Sure the overworld map will be more interesting this time without loading screens in between the areas, with the lessons learned from Breath of the Wild. More than the graphics update, I'm very curious about the gameplay changes and how the world will be layed out. And the soundtrack off course. How far will Nintendo diverge from the original?

BTW I won't buy a Switch 2, so will miss out on this unfortunately.

Edit: As a reminder, the original game got unofficially decompiled and ported to PC (you have to provide a Rom file for the assets), with possible enhancements while staying true to the original game: https://www.shipofharkinian.com/

If it's not rated T for Teen in the USA it might not be a good / honest remake, because there's no way in hell Deadhand and the Shadow Temple / Bottom of the Well wouldn't get it rated that high in modern times.

I would be so excited for this if I was still willing to support Nintendo

I love OoT and I still play the game semi regularly, but I just feel so conflicted about this. It's good that a game I like so much is being made more easily available and is getting the (nearly) 30 year old limitations and rough edges polished out, but on the other hand... I just don't know. In my opinion those rough edges give the game a certain charm that gets lost even if the devs do everything right

I'm of a similar mind, but at least no remake, good or bad, will remove the original. Thanks to the hard work of decompilation teams, anyone can play a truly definitive version of the original OoT at any time. It's both preserved and perfected, available as it was but with support for the controllers, PC setups, and refresh rates that we are used to today.

That's why I'm okay with the remake even if it is a strong departure from the original game. I'm more interested in a reimagining type of remake rather than one that just tries to do exactly what the original did with better graphics.

The thing that I remember the most about OoT, even all these years later, is the ambience. If they can keep that general feeling while modernizing the game, it will be awesome. We'll see whether or not they're able to!

I guess for the middle ground, there is still the unofficial de-compilation project https://www.shipofharkinian.com/ . Just added it to the post.

Ship is amazing. Played through z64 like 5 times when it came out and tried to play on cart again, but the frame rate, cutscenes, and item selection were painful. I can’t go back to the original. I’ve been spoiled

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Understandable. I'm not that sensitive in the way you describe it. Still prefer playing the games as they were intended, with original resolution and even CRT filters (RetroArch fan here). There are lot of cool mods for the original Rom file, so there is that. I haven't gotten into trying out Ship myself, there are too many games (plus emulated ones)! And to be honest, I also fear getting spoiled too. :D It could happen to any of us!

I will say pointedly, the instant you place an item onto the left directional pad, you’re fucked, it’s over.

[–] Thunderbird4@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago

Going from 3 C-button items to 7 makes it a whole new game. Especially Majora’s Mask, with all of the mask changes all the time. No way I could go back to just the C-buttons after that.

Ship of Harkinian is how I've been playing OoT the most lately and I can't recommend it enough

I bought a Switch, which for a long time I call "My $500 Zelda machine", as I really only played Breath of the Wild on it.

Now with Factorio and the classic N64 library, I feel better about buying it.

There isn't anything technically speaking about the Switch 2 I want, as I just got a PS5 and it blows that out of the water.

Shame this isn't on switch, I'd have liked to play it

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 6 points 7 hours ago

I will not buy a Switch 2, especially for these prices. I wonder what the reason for Switch 2 exclusivity is. Either it is just to have a reason for people to buy the system, or it is truly technical, in which case the ambitions might be even bigger than we think.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

You paid $500 for a Switch 1?

[–] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 0 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Something around that, I don't remember exactly

I want to say the OLED peaked at USD$350, what countries dollar were you speaking of?

[–] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 1 points 11 minutes ago

$300 something for the system, $60 for the game, not sure how much a pair of pro controllers cost, but I walked out spending close enough to $500 for the point to stand.

US dollars, don't remember what year I bought it. I'm guessing around 2018, it was shortly after breath of the wild released.

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 8 points 9 hours ago

Whether it's a simple remake or a more complex reimagining, I can't wait for this game and I'll be playing it on day 1.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

Oh wow, I saw it too!

Can't find the OoT content in this video. Not sure if the video was changed but at the given timestamp all I see is StarFox.

OoT is one of my favorite games, and I'm not personally interested in a remake. You don't need a new Mona Lisa just because we invented better paints.

Edit: That said I wouldn't say no to trying it if it was put in front of me.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 4 points 8 hours ago

That picture is about all we got to see anyway.

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 3 points 9 hours ago

Yes, the video was edited and cut, initially I think there was 20 or 30 minutes wait time before the actual video started, as it was a live stream capture. I updated the link with new correct timestamp: https://youtu.be/PvUPDSDZg1k?t=3183

I was a skeptic of the FF7 remakes but both wound up being great, in my opinion. I don't know if OoT is as much fertile ground for added content as FF7 was/is. I won't be too interested in a remaster, we already had that and it felt like it had generally lost something.
