Devils advocate, but I feel like we threads was brigaded in advance before actually doing anything shitty.

Yes they're a terrible company, and yes, it's a 99.9% certainty that federation with threads will cause an issue. However...

If we are trying to encourage companies in general to use more FOSS and change to FOSS, then we shouldn't be preemptively punishing them before they even join.

Its going to turn companies off moving to FOSS and frankly it comes across as kind of dickish.

I gave up on swipe typing and installed a simple, basic, Open Source keyboard. I loved swipe, but got fed up with dealing with the aggravation.

Any touch keyboard can screw up, of course. But going back to tapping has reduced the errors a hundred fold. With the added bonus of extra privacy.

Actually many governments are concerned about it. But only the US (so far) had pulled the nuclear option.

I feel like they're threatening a shutdown in the hopes of getting them to reverse their decision because if they just quietly go along with it, other countries will likely quickly follow suit in short order.

The reality is that the lifespan of "most popular social media app" is incredibly short. In the space of a few short years, we've gone from MySpace to Facebook to twitter to vine to Snapchat and now to tiktok.

TikTok will soon enough be replaced by "the next cool thing" and BD knows that if they sell in the US, that new entity will quickly replace them globally because the US effectively IS the influencer market.

Viewers go where the content is, and that's still overwhelmingly American (for better or worse). There is no successful social media app without including the US and BD knows it.

I used Crucial brand in both my desktop and my laptop upgrades a few years ago (I don't remember the exact model...mx500 maybe?) And I haven't had a single issue.

Absolutely rock-solid.

You've basically just described any of the Telltale games.

Visual novels with action usually limited to QTEs.

Unfortunately company is no more, so what they have out is all there is.

Good point well made. I hadn't considered that.

I'd argue that the wheel was invented not because "walking" was inefficient, but because flesh is weak and gets tired.

A robot doesn't have that weakness. It thinks nothing of running five hours at high speed if necessary. It has no need of wheels if it can just Gump it cross country with cargo on his back a la Death Stranding.

It's AMEE! This can't end well.

As per the article saying that "selfies pose a health concern", I'm going to posit that instead of a health concern, it's literally just Darwinism at it's most basic.

Yeah. Same. I moved to Mastodon, and then ended up getting my invite to Bluesky (two weeks before it opened to everyone...thanks Jack Dorsey...real helpful...). But no one is there. Mastodon has mostly tech and open source. Bluesky is...well...nothing that I can tell.

Unquestionably the winner of Twitter's fall was TikTok, when suddenly everyone including politicians started making accounts/posts. Which is likely a large part of the push to get it banned in the US. Because it's taking away users/advertisers from good ol' 'murican tech businesses owned by south african diamond mine nepo babies.

The fact that "Dash to Dock" isn't built in because Gnome is going all in on the ridiculous minimalist tablet like interface is seriously one of the things that makes me uninstall it after five minutes every time I've tried to give it a shot.

I'm running a desktop with two 32 inch monitors, not a frickin' tablet. The reason traditional desktop interfaces have survived for so long is because they work, dammit. I shouldn't have to click into an app drawer every time I want to run an often used app just because some developer thinks they should look like a tablet.

/end rant
