I’m with you on most of this except I’m the physical media person, and also run the Plex server for my f&f ;)

I’m going to be setting up a self-host game streaming server soon too, because I won’t -buy- digital-only.. but I will pirate it and throw some money at the indie devs when I can!

This shit is why I won’t buy anything that doesn’t have a physical copy.

I’m happy to rent stuff through a streaming app as long as it’s clear to everyone involved that’s what it is. But if I ever hit a buy button I would require access to it in perpetuity, the same way as a physical copy. But that’s not how that works, so if something is only available as digital media, and isn’t part of a rental platform, I’m not paying for it, end of.

(This mostly deals with games; I don’t spend money on much other media, but I refuse on principle and will pirate if it’s digital only. If it’s an indie studio I’ll donate directly when I can, but I’m not risking a financial loss like that. I can’t afford the risk.)

Well sure, but we all know that’s not going to happen any time soon. So until then, approach from all available fronts.

If something like this actually works as designed, I’d like to see companies start to offer it free to employees, in much the same way a lot of them pay for financial planning services as part of the bennies.

With the amount of data brokers can have on people, and the sheer number of brokers, I could see something like this being a valuable component of a good enterprise security team. Help prevent social engineering breaches.

It would also disrupt the data brokerage model, and that’s a win.

Then there’s the 2.5 people. The ones who would absolutely hit it with a hammer if they could just find one, so they use a wrench/pliars/screwdriver impotently, instead.

Oh when did you install the camera in my pantry?

Hey this is just what I need. And exactly when I needed it.

I have an old enterprise tower I’ve been trying to set up for my bedroom tv (I believe from 2009 or so) that only has 4gb ram but 12 (!!!!) usb ports, and mint with xfce is still much too heavy for it, despite it being able to run win 10 fairly well.

All it needs to be able to do is run my vpn, torrent client, and web browser for media playback (Plex web, hosted elsewhere on my network).

I run a pihole and see basically the same thing you do. I think the stuff that’s left is built in, hosted on their own domain. If that’s the case, probably not blockable across the board.

With a quick search I found an extension called ‘block “read more”’, but it’s 2 star with 2 users so… idk maybe there are better ones but it looks like that extension had to be done for each website, rather than universally, so it’s a very small list.

If you don’t mind doing a bit of work for it, and the complaint stems from the same set of websites, there’s an extension called element blocker that lets you block whatever you want from a given website, like chat popups and stuff.

You assume they are only collecting usage data with their apps, which is typically not the case. Some of them request every permission on your phone just to collect as much as they can.

Does that include all the animated stuff, do you know?

[–] ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 10 months ago

I’ve watched all the series and had no idea.

Thanks for explaining!

Ha! This is my new way of looking at my smart devices. I’ll sell you off if you don’t do what I want, and buy something that does. Very much a threat.

I recently factory reset all my Roku TVs, and didn’t connect them to the internet… and they work much better now.

Roku broke big time when I insisted on privacy. blocked the entire Roku domain, it broke the apps on a 1-month schedule like clockwork to get the network release for reinstall which allowed for phone home. lol no. I trashed it. They are dumb TVs now.
