Hopefully wikipedia recognizes this as the official Canary in the Chrome mine. I was first impressed with chrome book because of seeing them used for education, getting my own laptop during school would've been mindblowing to kid me. I was unimpressed with the strangulation process of the OS but again shocked when they added a linux boot mode. There needs to be better alternatives by now, I would be ok with an OS developed by the department of education in conjunction with higher educational institutions. Could have a decent non-profit approach to a browser and ad blockers could legitimately be built in as a "protect the children" aim of approach.

The most ironic part...

.... an ad for an app for the article....

But that complacency isn't happening to everyone. A lot are just festering, slowly digesting more incredulous and radical propaganda/influencers. Every ones base reality of the events that are happening over the country is getting completely skewed by the new types of outlets like tiktok that they flock to because of the lack of accountability by our elected officials and journalists/news organizations.

During just this last hurricane Helene I've heard more anger and outrage about the government than anything to actually do about what's been hit or what the people and rescue workers are actually doing. This is how we get mass shooters and assassinations becoming more prolific, people aren't just complaining and going about their day. They're nodding and grinding their teeth while smiling.

ohhh data collection taxation, I like it. You would think it would be a no-brainer but look at marijuana taxation and the continued resistance to rake in all that public funding. Would make most of the controversy around AI disappear if they tax it's collection.

I'm just tired of my electronics doing "extra". I want to pause the video/player, I don't want that to activate other activities for my device to perform...I just want to pause the fucking video. They're all guilty of this though, either they show ads or screenshots of what they want you to watch next. I can't even pause a video anymore to look at something or show something. The amount of times I've paused to have a discussion and the distracting shit plays in the background annoyed me to the point I no longer use the "smart tv" to watch anything and only use the tv hooked up to the comp so I can actually control and have a pleasant viewing experience.

I believe in a well-regulated market he wouldn't have found success like he did. Running for 8 years off of parents and VC/stock influx of millions of dollars screams anti-competitive to me. At the very least if we had decent privacy protection laws then the early data harvesting and business application probably would've been looked into at the start and shutdown, or else the company broken up from a monopoly once it started strangling whole sectors.

You're not misremembering. I remember seeing it on there "podcast" or whatever it is where they talked about it extensively and I believe louis chimed in with a video going over it.

Actually think that's a rather apt description. Entertainment companies already went after Dish when they had an "AutoHop" commercial feature which included basically a streaming server from your home it would download and be accessible through (link). Kinda interesting because I didn't know Dish was thinking ahead and had a pre-setup package for people wanting to remote stream home content.

Yeah, but it's not Youtube making the content I guess is my problem. Everyone is mostly here because of all the Reddit crap, doing the EXACT same thing google did to videos with youtube. No one here is completely fine with a "Reddit Premium Account!"^tm^ I patron a few creators so I help with what I can, I will not join the youtube "member" additional fee. I also have been trying to branch out to creators that upload to multiple sites, it can be a little bit of a pain like figuring out Lemmy and how everything works but obviously it's better than sticking with a company gouging and controlling content on their platform for profit.

Those sponsor spots absolutely blow my mind. They're there, forever in the video no matter how times it's viewed. That's a lot of trust to have in an advertising relationship, both the creator (who is basically tattooing a person in a portrait they're painting with an ad) and company have to determine if it's enough compensation based on..... feels I guess lol. I'm pretty sure there is some after data but how do you know which videos take off or not? Then if there's any controversy, whole things a mess and I hope they get a lot for it.

lol your mistype makes it look like you're trying to set a legal precedence to collect insurance by claiming it was yourself drilling the hole in your head.

That's just not the same at all. How many times do you get to vote on the referenda? I'm really interested to know where this mindset comes from that a social media upvote/downvote is anything like a real political "vote". It's completely different except the name, is that where the confusion is coming from? Is this an age/demographic thing?

You can vote no or yes on a referendum. The Upvote is for comments that contribute, the downvote is for off-topic not that you disagree with the policy! By continuing this logic you're exposing you want to continue "Voting" on whether you agree with a topic in "privacy". That's not how public discourse works, which this is. You guys are acting like everyone is a guest speaker and you're the X-factor judge deciding if they should continue or get off the stage.

Anyone looking at the actual voting system on here would not say it's democratic or fair/balanced. There are no protections or even logic to construct a system like that because we're not voting on policies! This is a town square, not your local council. You're wanting to walk into the square and vote on the flowers or people walking by, that's not how public interaction should work!

In every single thread the downvote is abused as a "I disagree" or as a reactionary "I don't like this person". It does absolutely nothing for the conversation, it's solely for others to feel better if the numbers match their own personality or to dissuade the person who's being downvoted from voicing their opinion.

This whole event is rather sad and disheartening like a depressing xkcd
