I don't know where the best quality copper ingots could be found in Ancient Mesopotamia, but I've definitely learned not to bother dealing with Ea-nāṣir!

I think the joke is that, in their opinion, lemmy.world might as well be reddit, since it's the largest and most well known instance that's usually the defacto gateway to Lemmy for fleeing Reddit users. :p

I think it's funny how all of these memes use the 'nam footage, because that's what the old vets came back from when we were growing up, but nowadays we're quickly approaching the point it'd almost be more pertinent to use Desert Shield/Storm or Fallujah.

I know time just kinda moves but damn it's weird to think about.

Once somebody nails ten in a row they can unlock the tacnuke and finish this thing already.

(Jokes aside, damn it's insane that's still going on. We gotta pray for those kids, man.)

I, too, just want Linux phones to take off already. We're this far in the future and I still don't really have a "computer in my pocket" so much as a "specialized commerce and consumption device that can occasionally be made to do useful things."

Android feels like the whole OS was made to be telemetry and advertiser friendly. I just wish I could have that "It's my device" feeling in my pocket like I do on my desk.

Your complaints about Android are valid, and I think there's fewer people who are actually "android enthusiasts" vs "It's what we've got right now"ists lol...

OpenSUSEs snapshots and the way they're configured out of the box is an absolute godsend and gangbanger for newcomers.

I have a general idea of how to set this sort of thing up in almost any distro now, but this is absolutely one of the ideas that swept me off my feet with OpenSUSE. I like a lot of distros but keep coming back to that wild little tumbleweed chameleon/geeko. :D

Like FOSS philosophy:

Both can exist, and both are great, and that's okay. :)

Haha I dunno I thought it was a pretty good primer for people seeking it out, and people in this community are super helpful and mentor-like in my experience.

I wouldn't even call myself a beginner anymore, but I read the whole thing. :)

Exactly. Both Manjaro and Ubuntu have had a certain history of "silly misguided shenanigans" that sorta damage trust. You just never know when the next stunt might be pulled.

I personally didn't have too many problems with Manjaro on my gaming laptop, but have since moved to EndeavourOS, which I'm enjoying very much. :D

Dunno sometimes it's gotta be something with their asset loading methodology. I put Battletech on my NVME and it still had crazy like 3-5-minute loads. A mod fixes it really well though and made the otherwise-great game much more playable.

Agreed with every word.

On a national level we're reaping the tainted harvest wrought by years of cultivating an uneducated populace.

They make for great desperate-workers, emotionally swayed voters, readily-motivated armed forces, and well-trained consumers, but making higher education an increasingly lofty privilege while also undermining it at every turn for politics is totally coming back to bite us.

Instead of being seen as the wealth of our nation, people are seen as another commodity product for corporations to buy and sell. (Readily evident at the defunding and disrespect towards arts and social sciences.)

Now when there's a "shortage" of educated workers, they just import them from wherever's cheapest.

...And tons of our college funding still goes to the football teams. To entertain and profit off the uneducated masses.

Well that's about the system in the USA or some third world countries.

And boy, are we feeling it. Infrastructure crumbling. Crime, unemployment, homelessness on the rise. Everybody is stupid. But check out our new super-carrier! /s

Man I wish I had some positive note to end this with but I'm just frustrated, and a lot of me wishes to just escape. Lol.

I've grown rather cynical of corp-speak lately, and I've heard this line before.

Whether said overtly or not, at least nowadays I'd be willing to bet a degree is used as a positive indicator that the candidate is likely in debt, will do anything for a job, and therefore will stick around and put up with almost anything for less wages, because they lack leverage.

They're therefore cheaper to hire than an independent individual that might exercise their freedom to leave if they're not treated with respect.

This might also explain why folks with high level degrees are constantly called "overqualified" and ghosted.
