Is it something you can talk about? I'm currently in the process of trying to switch from pihole to pfblockerng but am interested if there are better alternatives

You are correct, however the reality is more nuanced. Good luck getting any of the old people in my family to try a different app for messaging. You can set it up for them, but hoo boy, "fixing" it when they move it or something else is a full time job and not worth the effort.
Flashing a dreame L10s was difficult but worth it. I'd recommend it if you have the expertise. I did end up having to buy a USB breakout board from eBay, though.
Always assume that even if not publicly available, some agency has knowledge of how to spy on you.
