When we started, none of us had any prior knowledge and quite frankly, if it broke all the time none of us would have stuck with it. It's the same for people when they started with Windows or Mac OS
I've never tried modal vim because I've only just heard about it. The next thing I'd try is restarting the computer. Or Ctrl + Q whichever's easier.

Kebab case with Pascal case in the usual places. I'd change to all kebab case but the muscle memory of typing Documents would nearly kill me.

The only other thing I can think of is, are you absolutely sure the key is the right type, efi or mbr, depending on how you're booting?

No I haven't. some version of Linux has been my only OS since the early 2000s. You would think that it would be in Microsoft's interest to make it run well in VMs. Still, I guess it's just another reason that Windows is crapware.
