Bizarre, I guess their business has been running on hopes and dreams instead of money for the past 30 years lol.

Yes but people will pay redhat Linux to use a distro with support. Also almost the entire US internet server infrastructure runs on Linux.

So yeah a company can provide an open source product with commercial support

Good detail added, I did not know that. But they're still doing so with a much smaller payout than if they tried to compete the way a US capitalist would through a closed source full ownership model.

Because an angry and stupid population votes GOP.

It's simple really. People vote on culture war issues, and respect posture more than reason, we are a weak species that is easily manipulated, moreso when you gut education.

He's not wrong. He was speaking in the implied scope of capitalism. Where u can't do something that cheap because without the ability to hit a huge payout for investors noone will fund you.

We're just seeing that capitalism can't compete with an economy that can produce stuff without making investors rich.

Yeah you're right, I couldn't remember the exact wording only the general sentiment, so i went with something close enough lol

Sadly though this was never going to be avoided, sure they're leaning hard into conservative cult nonsense, but they were still on a downword optics trajectory. Its impossible not to have this happen in capitalism, it will always be inevitable that enshitifcation happens to milk profit from anywhere it can, and that will always look bad.

One of my favorite lines from early on in trumps rise to cult leader was "Conservatives would let Trump shit in their mouth just to watch liberals become disgusted"

This needs to be made more visible on github, like a little tag near all the share data under about. But I guess the only way that would work was people self reporting their CLA's. And not sure how keen microsoft would be on a consumer protection change

How would you determine if a thing is true open source, or capitalism masquerading as open source like you've described, if you were to just stumble onto a software randomly and wanted to check?

Dividing the people through wedge issues.
