TiVo was an early digital video recorder that dominated the market for a while. Broadcasters brought lawsuits against the company saying the recording of videos was violating copyright laws, and advertisers hated it because you could skip commercials. TiVo argued in court that they weren’t pirating, but just time shifting the content. Similar arguments were used for people who ripped rented dvds and so on.

It’s like playing chess by mail, but with Doom.

Oh, that’s bad. I’m not a Microsoft user, but one of the reasons I avoid third party mail apps is that I don’t want them to hold onto my mail on their own servers. That a $3T company is doing it is really disturbing, because it’s something I have only associated with slimy startups.

It’s also not clear that any Ars users visited the about page.

Are weblogs not a thing? They should be able to tell how many times that page was accessed and by whom with a single query.

It’s a genre called magical realism.

I never read the books, but this sounds like what they mean.

I have been more excited about this game coming out than any other one in recent memory. The first game, while not being a great technological achievement, captured the vibe of the ttrpg really well and it’s one of only a handful of games that I not only completed but did so multiple times. The haunted hotel to this day remains the scariest game component I’ve played, and I’m a regular player of horror games.

I was so disappointed when they bogged down and went into development hell. I finally wrote them off because I’ve seen that happen enough times that I figured they just would never ship.

I was excited by the news that another company was taking it over, but the game narrative changed so dramatically that it’s really turned me off. I’ll do a wait and see on it once the reviews start coming out, I suppose, but it’s not something I’m excited about anymore.

He looks so much like The Mandarin from Iron Man that it creeps me out.

Hopefully it will push the AR/VR industry forward.

I’ve been expecting this to be the new iPhone in that I think it has the potential to transform consumer perceptions and the industry. I’m personally waiting for reviews and a hands on test because my eyesight is crap. If it makes it so I can use a non-blurry monitor (my vision isn’t correctable to the point that I can easily read a monitor, and I compensate by using the best and sharpest I can find), it would be life changing for me and easily worth the $4k or whatever the final cost is after taxes and lenses and such.

But, like with iPhone, I think it just gets better from here and that the use cases developed using the high end headset will cascade through the industry.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and kind response.

You have changed my mind on the subject. As a queer person it’s easy to see us as one big community, and I know that things like humor can read totally differently than how they sound over brunch. And as I said, I have always meant that kind of parodying in an explicitly trans supporting kind of way.

But your comment made me understand that those are not my jokes to make. We are all team rainbow, but the experiences of the trans community, especially now, belong to the trans community. While it was not my intention to trigger an emotional reaction, the fact that I did so and your very gentle and kind correction has made me resolve to not make that mistake again.

So you changed a mind today and educated a person. Thank you, and all love to you ❤️
