Seems like at the very least it would require a different set of tools and knowledge. I can do pretty much everything down to completely tearing down and rebuilding an engine so replacing ball joints or suspension A-frames is easy for me, but I expect that sort of thing to be outside of most people's knowledge. Even so, there's quite a lot that anybody can do to maintain their current vehicle without needing any special knowledge they can't learn in five minutes. What can we do ourselves on an EV to keep the batteries and motor in good running condition, and how would we even know that there's a fault that needs addressed? I can't imagine a cheap EV having a full range of sensors installed, and yet on an ICE you can easily hear or feel when something isn't right with the engine.

This article doesn't really touch on the biggest issue of getting into an EV - the price tag. I mean, $26k to get into an entry-level model? I paid $11k for my SUV, and the only reason I could afford that was due to a pay-out from the company that totaled my previous vehicle. Show me a used EV with towing and storage capacity more in the range of $6k that I can expect to drive for twenty years with basic maintenance and you might get me interested.

Beyond that, they claim that an EV is cheaper to maintain over the years? OK I've been driving my used SUV for 15 years now and I've spent less than a grand on replacing parts (not including stuff like tires that are going to be replaced on any vehicle). My previous vehicle was driven for 24 years and cost even less to maintain because it didn't have 4WD. It looks like within these time periods I would have expected to replace EV batteries several times (most estimates put battery lifetime between 8-15 years), and how much would that have cost? I understand that most people can't be bothered to learn how to perform even the most basic maintenance tasks and believe that you need to buy a new car every 5 years, but I would like to see realistic maintenance estimates for those of us who don't treat our vehicles like a piece of disposable tupperware.

I actually did see that model recently but it's ridiculously expensive, and I'm not sure you understand what a 4.5" screen means. I did pull up my current phone and it's actually listed as a 4.6" screen (the whole phone is 129x65mm). The search on GSMarena is apparently broken because when I try to find anything with a max size of 135x70 it doesn't even bring up the line of models my phone is from despite them having pages for each of the phones, so I've given up trying to find anything there.

What really drives me nuts is that technology is supposed to get smaller over time, and yet cell phones are going in completely the wrong direction. I used to be able to get phones with a 4" screen and a slider keyboard that was very easy to type on, and yet trying to type on a larger on-screen keyboard feels cramped and even after several years of practice still results in constant errors. This requires using the stupid spell checker, which itself introduces frequent errors to the words I DID type correctly so I still spend a lot of time correcting mistakes in every test I send.

That's definitely a unique phone, it looks like the company went bankrupt in 2019. I'm afraid I wasn't clear about my need for a dual-screen, however, as my target usage is to have the second screen act as the keyboard since sliders are no longer available. Obviously this model wouldn't work for that, but thank you for pointing it out.

Thanks but this is still a foldable, not two separate screens, and is still substantially larger than the 4" screen size I was asking about. I could probably go up as high as 4.5"? I don't know what the fascination is with these massively huge screens these days, people might as well be trying to carry a tablet in their pocket.

Saw this on mastodon yesterday and it got me to thinking... Does anyone know of a dual-screen phone (not the foldable style discussed here) that has something smaller like 4" screens? The only models I found had either a 2.5" or 6" screen, neither of which would work for me. I prefer something that can fit in my pocket and a dual screen might be a nice solution for me since a keyboard in landscape mode takes up so much of the screen.

You might want to use a code block instead of bullet points for your table, the way you presented it is unreadable but I found the info on your blog page.

One of my criteria for video formats is the portability. Like sometimes I might watch something through a web browser which natively supports x264. Yeah x265 provides better compression, and AV1 certainly looks interesting, but they both require the addition of codecs on most of my viewing devices and in some cases that's not possible.

For most cases I've found that CRF25 with x264 works reasonably well. I tend to download 720p videos to watch on our 1080p TV and don't notice the difference except in very minor situations like rapid motion on a solid-color background (usually only seen on movie studio logo screens). Any sort of animated shows can go even lower without noticeable degradation.

I didn't subscribe to any of the subs, rather I created a multi with a collection of the ones I was interested in, and gave it a generic-sounding name. Easy to click on but it never pops up on my home page and doesn't stand out if I'm reading reddit at work. Gives me a nice bit of separation under a single account.

Honestly I wish lemmy would introduce a feature like multi-reddits. I have a pretty long list of communities here and would love to break them up into groups. That's the only feature of reddit I actually miss.

People keep separate accounts for their porn? That just seems to suggest they are embarrassed by their kinks. 😄

And nobody will ever need more than 640K of memory, so the fact that even your cell phone carries vastly more than that must mean you yourself are up to no good, right?

Even if you're not dealing with a constant video stream, the power of the internet lies in moving vast amounts of data around. Yeah a lot of that information is based of corporate privacy invasion, but you also have things like medical databases or performing jobs remotely. I had gigabit routers in my home at a time when 10/100 routers were still typically used even in businesses. If you have a capability, someone will find a way to make use of it and new innovations will pop up that we hadn't even considered before. Imagine where we would be at if Xerox hadn't invented the mouse and GUI desktop years before personal home computers were even available.

I've been noticing lately that the front page of reddit now only contains some posts from the last few subs I visited, even more posts from subs I barely even read before, and currently two posts from subs I've never seen but are now part of my subscribed reddits. And when I take the time to go through the posts that actually look interesting, those read posts stay on my front page for the rest of the day and no new content is brought up. At this point the front page is completely worthless and the only reason I visit is for r/comics and r/facebookscience, all my other content is found on lemmy and mastodon.

I would second Debian for stability, it's what I use for all my VM servers. I have always preferred KVM however, as I had a lot of trouble with VMware hogging my cpu years ago. KVM has the virtual machine manager available for GUI monitoring but I'm not sure how far it goes for creating new VMs as I've always handled the setup directly from command line.
