What do you think happened to building full of engineers designing plans and making stress load calculations? What do you think happened to switchboard operators?

Except ISPs dont give you modems anymore, they give router/modems you can have the router you want but you are forced to use the one they give you
Patents are not the problem, they serve as a way to share the knowledge of a creation with everyone while protecting your company for a REASONABLE TIME to compensate for the RnD costs.
