it should be more hands-off for the user and the server should silently just do the thing to get the instanced community before sending data back to the client

Understanding how much data it might be potentially requesting, I'd even accept a "please wait while we load this community" screen that then redirects to the community once its been loaded onto your instance

Looks like its here: !cartographyanarchy@lemm.ee

Took some poking before it fully showed up for me so I'm guessing I'm the first person on my instance to try to view that community.

Shout-out to the /r/Sysadmin mods who decided subreddit uptime was too important to partake in the blackout. Man that place just had a really toxic tone and really made me strongly want to avoid the Sysadmin career track

Dude the name alone sounds awesome

edit: I want to post this map but its complaining that the content type isn't html. I don't really see the purpose of linking a webpage when linking directly to the image will allow it to properly embed? Not sure if that's an instance limitation or a community limitation but it seems like not the right choice for meme communities

I've run cinnamon on some pretty anemic systems and it was quite snappy. But I'd also been able to upgrade the memory so if it's not upgradabe that may not be as good

realise I want to go back to uni and study info tech

I highly recommend it! College as an adult who's been in the workforce is way better than college as a kid fresh out of highschool. Great opportunity to make some more friends, do some cool college activities, plus there's lots of good opportunities for student pricing on stuff if you have a .edu email and its a brilliant change of pace.

Eh, it's not bad. Everywhere there's computers they'll need a computer janitor to keep them running. It's just not the insanity of 2021-2 where everyone needed techs and starting wages were rising rapidly

Mass student protests of dozens of kids going to school as furries

This sounds like the kind of protest id participate in when I was in school. As a parent I'd totally wear a fur suit to pick up my kids as a form of protest

For phones and laptops, wireless charging is probably the way forward

Wireless charging is super lossy though and generally far slower than charging over USB. I'm sure some of that can be overcome with more research but I have a hard time believing wireless anything will ever be as efficient as wired

Now that AI is getting decent, it can be quite fun coming up with creative insults when its foisted where it shouldn't be and creates significant extra friction for otherwise mundane daily tasks.

you swipe your credit card, pick up food or drink in a little monitored area and walk out with your items.

The only time I used one of those was at a conference center and I was trying to get a cheap lunch. The item I wanted was out of stock in the computer system so it wouldn't let me purchase it and the item I grabbed was charged as something else entirely (netting me a $3 discount at least)

Vending machines have been around for years and their faultiness has long been a trope in media. I'm not holding my breath for employee-less checkout
