I was one of those people. But statistically, even the people who migrated from Reddit to here are not "normies". My "normie" friends (which is all of them ๐Ÿฅฒ) just kept on using Reddit and didn't notice anything. They weren't even using 3rd party apps.

Kinda same. I also have an Ubuntu homelab server, but I feel like I use my Steam Deck more often than I spend an occasional 3-day all-nighter to get something working on the server over SSH.

But my joke premise was obviously flawed anyway. We are supposed to be, but we clearly aren't.

And to address your point regarding votes being viewable only by admins, it's sort of pointless cause anybody can become an admin, just make your own instance. This just makes your statement to be "let only the more technically advanced people see the votes", which just makes it unfair.

I was really confused seeing this post, because I always assumed that Lemmy votes were public. Because how else are instances going to sync them? And indeed, the API exposes them completely, this change will just make it easier.

Then I was really confused when I saw so many comments being against it. A lot of "I'll leave if votes become public" in here. That's a lot of people who somehow assumed Lemmy was private. Aren't we all supposed to be Linux nerds in here?

It's not better, it's just different, your comparison is flawed.
Personally, I prefer analog watches for most cases, because it's much easier for me to do calculations visually. To add 6 to 7/19 on a digital clock I need to turn on my math brain (19+6=25, 25>24 => 25-24=1), but on an analog watch I can just visually read the number opposite of 7.

And that's just one example, there are other cases, besides just being easier to read at a glance. I've used both digital and analog watches since birth, but analog watches are marginally better for daily use, where to the second precision isn't necessary.

May I remind you, that Prometheus always gave up on Robert, in every episode...

I wasn't making it sound bad. I'm just saying how it is. We wouldn't tolerate game mechanics like those nowadays. That's all I'm saying.

It's a possibility, if they really wanna play the game. Nowadays we are so spoiled for choice that we would just either switch to another game or pick up the phone.

My brother and I were, like, 7 and 10, respectively, when we played this. Some things on the list were obvious, others (the heck is a "slalom"?!) we had to guess just by doing every possible thing you could do with a car. A couple day's work, bada-bing bada-boom.

People definitely would've given up nowadays.

Sure, but that's not at all what we are discussing here. We are discussing the perception and overall approval of corporal punishment in conservative cultures.

And while methods that can actually inflict permanent damage to children would be perceived negatively even in conservative cultures, slaps would be approved by most.

Downvoting problems away. The Lemmy equivalent of "1 like = 1 prayer"

I would say that physical abuse like that is not comparable to a slap. Much fewer people, even in a conservative culture, would approve of disciplining a child that way. Majority would approve of a slap.

Besides, just because you turned out different doesn't mean that majority will, too. I've been belted my entire childhood, but I personally wouldn't do it. Doesn't mean it's become uncommon in general. Usually, people take after their parents.
