there’s no way to block whole instances

Yes there is. If your instance is running a 0.19.x version, then you'll have instance blocks as an option in your profile settings page

Consequently, Relays focus on combating network abuse and mitigating infrastructure-level harms, rather than making granular content moderation decisions.

This is something people only do if they're a) a tech bro with too much money or b) looking for financial gain.

Which means that the core infrastructure on Bluesky will be hosted by people who are either hostile to my existence or make money off of people who are hostile to my existence.

I think I'll pass...

Reddit isn't going to magically get better though. Reddit is dying and will only get worse with time, continually shedding users as time goes by.

So making noise about lemmy, and making suggestions on how to prove it is a good thing, because unlike reddit, lemmy might actually get better with time.

There is no easy way to implement it at the app level, because apps have no way of knowing whether any given link is a mastodon link or not

I call it the x social media site

Any possible interest I had just evaporated with this response. Why would I share a space with bigots and fascists when I could just choose not to do that?

Misskey roles give the ability for admins to implement many of these suggestions. They don't federate, but they do allow for sandboxing of new users and gradual privilege escalation.

They're not perfect, and they're not as granular as they could be, but they're a really great first step for showing the potential of the idea.

Not that I'm aware of.

But what would such a group actually do?

[–] ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 9 months ago (1 children)

In reality, any user can force federation by simply searching for the handle of a user or content of the fedeverse from the search box of their instance. This method always works unless the instance has been previously federated.

That's not quite true. That won't bypass explicit defederation at the instance level, and authorised fetch can stop it from working at the individual block level too.

It's a coverup...

Until the cameras are destroyed, which is easier to do when they're not streaming in real time
