I would, at this point, trust more on a fork of piefed than upstream, given all the drama with hardcoded filters and Rimu being unable to act as a federated project maintainer.

Well, at this point, the piefed idea is in the mud for me. The point of federation is exactly not giving people too much power. Just move on from him and let's do better.

It's still at a very early stage, and they do have hosting costs in mind.
It's the first proposal I've seen trying to solve the problem
atproto from bluesky is a protocol exactly defined to fix this problem
I paid like 75 euros for it a long time ago
