Today I encountered something new and dystopian:

You can airplay from your iphone to an appletv but now youtube drops and locks the quality at 360p, making the content unwatchable on larger screens.

Once you disable airplay, the quality jumps back to 1080p. If you choose 1080p before and enable airiplay after, it still changes.

This hasnt been an issue for years. this new anti consumer move prompted me to order another raspberry pi to put kodi on.

Hi folks, I'm trying to put my newly acquired HDDs to good use and at the same time manage the minuscule amount of storage my vps has. Since it is hosting several fedi services, I need some external storage and I figured I'd just tunnel some object storage from home.

So I set up a working wireguard connection from my homenetwork to the vps, connected the object storage (GarageHQ) to one end and probably will connect the fedi services (lemmy, mastodon, matrix, peertube) to the other.

Here comes the issue: do I have to make the respective wireguard instances a proxy for the services to be able to speak with each other or do I even have to make a site to site connection to connect the two docker networks?

The connection would look something like this: GarageHQ---WireguardHS---WireguardVPS---Mastodon|Mastodon---NginxPM---OpenWeb

Anyone got something like this to work so far? Am I overlooking something major?

I'm currently running both a home server and a VPS. The former is not reachable through the internet, only through vpn. The latter hosts public services.

The VPS is regularly cutting it very close with storage and today I messed up and crashed the whole stack trying to make an impromptu backup. Lesson learned: we need more storage! I could just rent more storage but just today I updated my home server with 16 TB of raid 1 enterprise HDDs.

So I thought I could maybe do a (wireguard) VPN tunnel directly to some storage service that I host on my homeserver. The upload is not great but realistically I dont need much. The important stuff stays on the VPS. Mainly videos, pictures and other stuff that doesnt get accessed a lot should go there. The rest should be "cached" at the VPS.

I would have to host wireguard on a server port, only have it access one folder which doesnt contain anything important, forward the port on the router and have the vps have the keys. Even if someone gets into the VPS and steals the keys, they only get that one file storage folder.

Has anyone done this? Are there services that do this or do I just host wireguard and thats it?

I will probably be harassed for this but I feel like I need to act.

The recent debate and decision by world to federate with threads seems to have sparked massive pro meta propaganda. Some accounts post completely one sided articles nearly every day, using carefully crafted language to shape meta as the „facilitator“ of the fediverse and some ~~beligerent~~ benevolent god. You dont have to scroll far in this community to find the posts I‘m talking about.

Please consider reporting these posts for the propaganda they are and asking your admins to defederate from threads.net.

To show you why meta is not welcome in the fediverse, here is a quote from the fedipact which is the reason I have defederated threads in my own instance.

Hi folks, today I would like to solve this non critical issue which doesnt break the system but just bothers me a little:

When Discover (I think its discover?) informs me that I have new updates for my machine on the kde taskbar, I can right click and click „update“ but it doesnt do it.

Even if I have no sudo prompt at that time. Is this due to it being a sudo action or what is the issue? Any ideas?

I know, I know, clickbaity title but in a way it did. It also brought in the situation in the first place but I'm just going to deliberately ignore that. Quick recap:

1. I came home at 3pm from the city, my internet at home didnt work.
2. checked multiple devices, phones worked out of wifi, I figured I need to restart the router
3. I login to the router and it responds totally normal but my local network doesnt. (Its always dns, I know)
4. I check the router log and see 100s of login attempts over the past couple of days.
5. I panic and pull the plug, try to get into my server by installing an old monitor, works, many errors about dns
6. Wife googles with her phone, seems I had https login from outside on and someone found the correct port, its disabled now
7. Obviously, local network still down, I replug everything and ssh into the server which runs pihole as dns
8. pihole wont start dns, whatever I do
9. I use history and find I "chmod 700"ed the dns mask directory instead of putting it in a docker volume...
10. I check the pihole.log, nothing
11. I check the FTL log, there is the issue
12. I return it to 777, everything is hunky dory again.

Now I feel very stupid but I found a very dangerous mistake by having my lan fail due to a less dangerous mistake so I'll take this as a win.

This might be a real stupid question but why is discover updating to a lower version? Is there any place I can read up why this is the case?

It feels like the amount of both, divisive posts and ghoulish comments is rising again.

One could argue that the world has a lot of divisive stuff going on and lemmy just talks about it. But the way people post about stuff seems more oot and hateful than it has been in the past.

Not saying it is that but if I wanted to bring the Fediverse down or at least keep my customers from going there, I would sow this stuff as much as I can.

I'm blocking ghouls left right and center atm but if I ever asked a friend to join lemmy, I'd hate to think of what they would see that I dont anymore.

Do we need stronger moderation?

• Maybe ban politics from c/memes?
• Become a little more stringent on "dont be a jerk" rules in communities?

One thing that really bothers me is the collapsing "discourse". Trying to mend fences and keep the conversation between sides going ime leads to nothing but downvotes and shitstorm.

I feel like a little more interaction (instead of intervention, at first) of the moderators would do wonders there.

Why switch?

I played with the idea of switching for quite a while. Having switched my daily driver from Windows maybe 6-9 Months ago I made many mistakes in the meantime.

Good and bad

This may have led to a diminshed experience with ubuntu but all in all, I was very pleased to see that Linux works as a daily driver. Still, I was unhappy with the kind of dumbed down gnome experience.

Problems

There were errors neither I nor people I asked could fix and the snap situation on ubuntu (just the fact that they’re proprietary, nothing else).

Installation

Installing debian (and kde) was easier and harder than I expected. The download mirror I used must not have been great although its very close to my location because it took ages although my internet connections is good.

Apps

Since I switched to Linux, I toned down my app diet a lot. Installing all my apps from ubuntu was as easy as writing a short list and going through discover. Later I added flatpak which gave me a couple apps not available through discover (such as fluffychat). The last two I copied directly as appimages.

Games

I was scared that the „old kernel“ of stable debian would be a problem. As it turns out, everthing works great so far, a lot better than on ubuntu which might or might not be my fault.

Instability

Kde does have some quirks that irritate me a bit like installing timeshift (because I tried network backups which dont work with it and the native backup solution does not seem to accept my sambashare) led to a window I could only close by rebooting.

Boot time

What does feel a bit odd is the boot process. After my bios splash, it shows „welcome to grub“ and then switches to the debian start menu for 3 seconds or so, then shows some terminal stuff and then starts kde splash and then login. This feels a lot longer than ubuntu did. Its probably easy to change in some config but its also something that should be obvious.

Summary

So far I‘m incredibly happy although I ran into initramfs already probably because of timeshift which I threw out again. I might do a manual backup if nothing else works. My games dont freeze or stutter which is nice. All apps I had on ubuntu now work on debian and no snaps at all.

TL;DR: If you feel adventurous, debian and kde are a pretty awesome mix and rid you of the proprietary ubuntu snap store. It also doesnt tell you that you can get security upgrades if you subscribe to ubuntu pro. Works the same if not better.

I have watchtower to keep my 50 production docker containers up to date. So far I have never had to resort to an old image since the new one was bugged but I know of the risks and dont have the --cleanup flag activated so I could easily spin up the old image if necessary. I also keep daily (mirrored) backups so I should be ok in the case of failure.

But I keep running into space issues due to multiple GBs of old images that I have to manually remove to not fill up the rather small ssd.

Does anyone have an idea how to automatically remove all but the newest unused docker image so I can quickly revert to it in case of failure but once there is another unused one of this container it goes away?

It's probably no big deal but searching for it together with watchtower didnt yield anything so far.

Disclaimer

I‘m not asking if you want to federate or not and why. The question is if a defined ruleset would make it more transparent for everyone and more future proof.

Since we are seeing major divides due to the (de)federation of threads and now the federation of flipboard, we might wanna discuss future rules so to not fight about everything.

I can see arguments for both sides but some of the technical ones are more compelling since peeps who are unhappy can always move, an overextended instance will have to close. So I‘d take this as the basic principle:

• no federation with instances bigger than half the fediverse (arbitrary number, could be no bigger than all of it as well)
• no federation with instances that push ads with their posts
• no Federation with instances that use altered versions or proprietary versions of AP.
• no one way federation

These are obviously just ideas. There are several „unions“ of instances already that implement more or less of these ideas but I think its something that should be discussed instead of just yes or no.

Also, I‘d suggest we make such rules permanent as in if any instance changes in this way, it gets auto defederated.

This would make interaction more clear and easy for users to choose their instance. For example, If someone wanted the possibility of twitter federating, they‘d not go to an instance that has this ruleset.

Any other ideas?
