You must unmount the drive before formatting. And also know that formatting wipes the drive, so if there is anything on there you want to keep, back it up beforehand

You can most likely simply mount the old drive and access the files that way. Just make sure that your boot configuration is set so it doesn't try to boot the windows disk.

And know that linux file permissions don't work on NTFS, which windows uses

I'm honestly fine if this is the default for beginner distros, as long as it's easy to disable and there is still a way to get to the logs
