login anonymously

What does this mean?

Is it similar to Chrome's "Incognito" mode?

Damn, Aurora is linked to google and you need to login to get apks, unlike F-Droid.

Aurora Store enables you to search and download apps from the official Google Play store. You can check app descriptions, screenshots, updates, reviews, and download the APK directly from Google Play to your device. To use Aurora Store, you need to have a Google Play account, and log in to your Google Play account when you first open and configure Aurora Store.

(Alternatively Aurora Store also allow you to login anonymously)

Unlike a traditional app store, Aurora Store does not own, license or distribute any apps. All the apps, app descriptions, screenshots and other content in Aurora Store are directly accessed, downloaded and/or displayed from Google Play.

Aurora Store works exactly like a door or a browser, allowing you to log in to your Google Play account and find the apps from Google Play.

Please note that Aurora Store does not have any approval, sponsorship or authorization from Google, Google Play, any apps downloaded through Aurora Store or any app developers; neither does Aurora Store have any affiliation, cooperation or connection with them.

F-Droid is cool, but limited with apks.

https://f-droid.org/

F-Droid is an installable catalogue of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) applications for the Android platform. The client makes it easy to browse, install, and keep track of updates on your device.

Yes, this is just another policy that hinders the working class, the duopoly does like their police state.

Anyone have any thoughts on APKPure as an alternative?

Known as Xiaohongshu in China, RedNote is a social media platform that includes images, short-form videos, community building tools, shopping and more. It is not a one-to-one TikTok clone, and it is not owned by ByteDance. It is owned by Shanghai-based Xingyin Information Technology.

American TikTokers who fear losing the platform have suggested their followers join them in downloading RedNote to send a message to the U.S. government, as well as the social media company Meta, which stands to gain new users of its TikTok-like product, Reels, if the ban goes into effect. Meta reportedly used a Republican lobbying firm to spread ill will toward TikTok in 2022.

On Monday, RedNote was the top free-to-download app on the Apple App Store, followed by TikTok’s sister app Lemon8.

On TikTok, some videos of people joking about saying goodbye to their “Chinese spy” (some in Mandarin) have racked up millions of views and likes. The memes are part of a deeper resentment some users feel toward the U.S. government for moving to ban TikTok in the name of security and safety even though some lawmakers use it themselves, as well as toward the continued politicization of other social media companies, like X and Meta.

“I’m going to download it on my phone. I’m going to let it track other apps. I’m going to give it permission to see my location and all of my contacts and then I’m just going to let it sit there,” a TikTok user posted. “I’m going to let it sit there as a little window through which my personal Chinese spy can see everything that I’m doing.”

“Our government, I’m convinced, loves and thrives seeing us unhappy and seeing us struggle and seeing us poor,” another TikToker said. “Seeing that RedNote, another Chinese app, which is owned and hosted in China, is the No. 1 app in the App Store today is just beautiful.”

Experts noted that the law gives the executive branch the authority to deem a country a “foreign adversary” and that in doing so it can choose to ban an app that comes from that country. In this case, China is already deemed a “foreign adversary” in the TikTok ban, and therefore the executive branch could theoretically decide that other apps from China must be banned.

Real-World Implications of Digital Censorship

  • The implications of digital censorship extend beyond social media, impacting real-world perceptions and actions regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
  • The use of algorithms and AI technologies in military operations, particularly by the Israeli military, is discussed as a concerning trend, with claims that these technologies are utilized to conduct targeted operations against Palestinians.
  • Specific systems, such as those developed by Israeli tech firms, are described as enabling the military to classify Palestinians as terrorists and target them effectively.
  • The connection between tech companies and military operations raises ethical questions about the role of technology in modern warfare and the responsibilities of corporations in these contexts.
  • The conversation emphasizes the need for greater accountability and transparency from tech companies regarding their involvement in military operations and their role in perpetuating narratives that justify violence against Palestinians.

Personal Accounts of Activism and Retaliation

  • Personal stories from former employees illustrate the risks associated with advocating for Palestinian rights within their companies, highlighting a culture of fear and retaliation.
  • One employee recounts being fired shortly after publishing an op-ed criticizing Apple's policies and their lack of support for Palestinian issues.
  • Another former employee describes being subjected to an internal investigation simply for questioning the company's stance on human rights, illustrating the lengths to which corporations will go to suppress dissent.
  • These experiences underscore the broader implications of corporate policies that prioritize profit and political alignment over ethical considerations and social justice.
  • The testimonies serve as a call to action for greater solidarity among employees and the need for continued advocacy against corporate complicity in human rights abuses.

Conclusion and Call for Accountability

  • The discussion concludes with a call for increased accountability from tech companies regarding their role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the need for transparency in their policies.
  • Activists emphasize the importance of collective action and solidarity among employees to challenge corporate practices that enable oppression.
  • The testimonies shared highlight the urgent need for a reevaluation of corporate ethics, particularly in relation to human rights and social justice.
  • The narrative advocates for a future where technology serves to uplift marginalized voices rather than suppress them, promoting a more equitable digital landscape.

Joining host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report are three courageous individuals who chose to put their careers on the line to fight against Big Tech suppression of voices fighting for Palestinian lives.

Saima Akhter, a former data analyst at Meta; Hossam Nasr, a former software engineer at Microsoft; and Tariq Ra’ouf, a former tech expert at Apple, speak about the internal struggles they dealt with in light of the genocide, which ultimately led to each of their dismissals.

And we will continue to support them 100% of the way, so as to keep the duopoly and the status quo of supporting genocides all over the world.

More forever wars where the working class continue to be killed off, while the owner-class and their lackeys rake in their profits and natural resources.

You Can’t Keep Your Parents’ Skulls [Caitlin Doughty | September 4, 2019 | theatlantic.com]

Under U.S. law, it’s nearly impossible to get permission to decapitate and de-flesh a relative’s remains.

Abuse-of-corpse laws exist for a reason. They protect people’s bodies from being mistreated (ahem, necrophilia). They also prevent a corpse from being snatched from the morgue and used for research or public exhibition without the dead person’s consent. History is littered with such violations. Medical professionals have stolen corpses and even dug up fresh graves to get bodies for dissection and research. Then there are cases like that of Julia Pastrana, a 19th-century Mexican woman with a condition called hypertrichosis, which caused hair to grow all over her face and body. After she died, her husband saw that there was money to be made by displaying Pastrana in freak shows, so he took her embalmed and taxidermied corpse on world tour. Pastrana had ceased to be regarded as human; her corpse had become a possession.

So where do skulls on bookcases come from? In the United States, no federal law prevents owning, buying, or selling human remains, unless the remains are Native American. Otherwise, whether you’re able to sell or own human remains is decided by each individual state. At least 38 states have laws that should prevent the sale of human remains, but in reality the laws are vague, confusing, and enforced at random. In one seven-month period in 2012–13, 454 human skulls were listed on eBay, with an average opening bid of just under $650 (eBay subsequently banned the practice).

If there were any legal wiggle room that might allow a person to get Dad’s head liberated from its fleshy shell, Tanya Marsh would know how to find it. Marsh is a law professor and the expert on human-remains law. “I will argue with you all day long,” she told me, “that it isn’t legal in any state in the United States to reduce a human head to a skull.”^[[1] https://archive.ph/SE19g]

DeArrow is an open source browser extension for crowdsourcing better titles and thumbnails on YouTube. The goal is to make titles accurate and reduce sensationalism. No more arrows, ridiculous faces, and no more clickbait.

"Clickbait" isn't the exception anymore, it's becoming the norm. Many have even started going through their entire backlog, changing old titles and thumbnails to be more attention grabbing and vague.

It's no one's fault. It's a system that creates a race to the bottom.

DeArrow hopes to stop this cycle. It's time to return to a more peaceful experience.

Cross-post comment:

Geerling also demonstrated that the 2GB Pi 5 comes with a couple of unexpected benefits that Upton didn't mention in his announcement—that the 2GB Pi 5 runs a little cooler and uses a little less power than the 4GB and 8GB editions. The 2GB Pi used just 2.4 W or power at idle and 8.9 W during a CPU stress test, compared to 3.3 W and 9.8 W in the 4GB version. The SoC of the 2GB Pi measured 30° Celsius at idle and 59° under load, compared to 32° and 63° for the 2GB version. Those are all small but significant differences, given that nothing has changed other than the SoC.

As to the exact functionality that was removed from the chip for the 2GB version of the Pi, the company hasn't gotten specific. But Geerling speculates that it's mostly related to functionality that's being handled by the custom RP1 I/O chip—RP1 handles the Ethernet and USB controllers, display interfaces, and GPIO, among other things.

So is it worth stepping down to a 2 GB Pi 5 just to get the simpler D0 chip? No. But is it cool to have a cheaper 2 gig option exist? Yes. Just make sure you have a use case for it that doesn't need a ton of RAM.^[[1] https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2024/new-2gb-pi-5-has-33-smaller-die-30-idle-power-savings]

A BBC report published on Tuesday on the killing of a disabled Palestinian man by Israel has drawn intense backlash, following what activists described as a "misleading headline" and "dehumanisation of Palestinians" amid the war in Gaza.

The British public broadcaster's news website initially ran the story with the headline "The lonely death of Gaza man with Down’s syndrome" — omitting mention of the fact that 24-year-old Muhammad Bhar was left to die by the Israeli army after a combat dog was violently set on him.

In the report, written by veteran Irish journalist Fergal Keane, the attack was not mentioned until the 16th paragraph — almost halfway through the piece.

Parents of kids who commit crimes in Tennessee will face fines up to $1,000 for each offense after the first one, under a bill that’s headed to Gov. Bill Lee’s Bill Lee

After a juvenile’s first offense, juvenile court is required to fine their parents for each subsequent crime, according to the bill’s language. If parents can’t afford the fine, they will be able to work it off through community service.

But most agree that Memphis and Shelby County are feeling the effects of juvenile crime. In 2023, Memphis Police told the City Council that officers had arrested more than 4,000 juveniles, including more than 500 for motor vehicle theft.

Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner said Tuesday that the county’s juvenile facility is nearing capacity, with 118 juvenile offenders held there. The youngest was 13 years old.

The BNSF freight train was carrying gasoline and odorless propane when it derailed near Manuelito, New Mexico, according to the NTSB.

The Apache County Sheriff’s Office, which was one of the law enforcement units that responded to the incident, said in an update the derailment is being treated as a hazardous materials incident.
