In the country I reside, everyone pays for the roads through income tax. Vehicle owners pay emissions tax. I think this is fair since everyone relies on the roads even if they never travel down a road themselves.
Imagine hosting an instance if Lemmy had that many users. I can imagine it being a full time job.

I disagree that Reddit's R&D spending is a lot. Look at any FAANG/FANGMAN/MAMMA company; their annual R&D spending is significantly higher.
