I have three niblings (2 nephews, 1 niece). Each one is getting a flashlight and a tiny Nitecore whistles when they get to a certain birthday, not sure which age yet. I know their parents would never forgive me if I gave them the whistles now.

The power was off for a little over two days, so we used our flashlights and other lights a lot. It really doesn't take much money to prepare. A lot of the gooseneck lamps these days use USB, so you can combine a lamp and a power bank to create a task light away from the backup battery.

I am pretty sure keeping pineapple off pizza is basic human decency.

Bread bowl salads are monstrosities. Also, quiches.

I am glad you are enjoying it so far! It has a bit of a learning curve, but it has improved significantly since I was first getting into it in high school around 2004. Wow... already 20 years.

The way I see it, Musk is only going to provide the investment if it fits into his investment portfolio strategy.

Well, and sometimes barely even that. He was desperately shuffling around capital trying to pony up when Twitter called him on his overly generous offer to buy the company. He simply didn't have enough liquid assets to do so.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm mostly talking out my ass. But as far as I know, it's a new DE that's being written in Rust using the iced toolkit. It looks like they're aiming to be Wayland native without the X baggage. It's been a while since the last full Pop release (20.04), so it will be nice to get the rest of the OS upgraded as well.

Gnome Terminal. I've tried out a few others, but at this point I'm kind of partial to just using the default with good integration with the rest of the desktop. Pop, in this case. I'm curious if they'll adopt something else for the terminal in COSMIC.

Edit: They just recently announced COSMIC Terminal, so that's a yes. I look forward to trying it out. It's based on alacritty's framework.

I've lived my entire life in Portland. This is the coldest Portland's gotten in my memory. We spent most of the weekend without power in a house hovering around 40F (4C). Four people are known to have died so far, including one from a tree falling on his bedroom. Is it not as cold as your neck of the woods? Sure. But it's very, very unusual for it to be this cold, so it hits harder when it does happen.

A reasonably stable currency is incredibly useful as an abstraction for value. Do you farm potatoes? Do you need a difficult medical procedure? I guarantee you, the surgeon, support staff, and the hospital are not much interested in being paid in a sufficient amount of potatoes.
