"contains" filters are so fickle. They are the filters you want to use the most but they are very unreliable

The newest dog whistle is simply DEI. They managed to snuggly clump all their racism, homophobia and misogyny into a single acronym.
Yeah that’s been my experience with most of the fediverse so far. It’s not going anywhere unless someone comes up with a solution to the discoverabilty problems.

Thank you for the rec. I checked them out, but it's not really what I'm looking for. Ideally my watch face will let me see a lot of information related to location and weather. For example, my main Apple Watch face currently shows: a compass, date, time, current temp, the high, the low, the conditions, wind speed and elevation. That's partly why I've stuck with an Apple Watch despite the severe shortcomings
I was looking into Pebble watches right before they got bought by Fitbit, was super bummed. Since then I've tried a Garmin (hated the app) and now on my third Apple Watch... I still don't love the Apple Watch and want an alternative. Between having to charge it all the goddamn time and after 10~ years it only having 3 usable watch faces I've been craving an alt. I signed up for the Pebble list - I'm ready. Pebble for every day and going to try out a Coros for fitness.
hype isn’t based on anything tangible
So just like crypto
EDIT: The crypto bros out in full force... and right on cue proudly proclaiming they don't understand the difference between the value of blockchain technology (which so far has not had a ton of real world value outside of mostly impractical database applications, other than furthering climate change and buying drugs) vs the SPECULATIVE value of coins since coins have no real value factors to back up their SPECULATIVE value. Stocks often have real value that back up their value, like company profits or products. Stop drinking kool aid to the point of literal zero critical thinking, jfc.
I’m on iOS and the app is having similar behavior for me.
Some report said the claim of organized theft was not true or greatly exaggerated
That’s what the downvote is for 😉
You could just not share every little scrap of your mundane lives
We agree on that and I find people who do that really annoying -often muting them-, but that's not really how I use Instagram for myself. I use Instagram to post vacation photos or to share some unusual life news, maybe four or five times a year and that's about it with posting. I just checked and I posted 3 times in 2024 and 9 in 2023, all vacations, death of a pet or moving news - All worthy of sharing with friends, imo. Otherwise, my main use case for Insta is to track things locally, like restaurants, bars, clubs, shows, events, etc. Unfortunately there's not a better alternative for that sort of use case in another app right now. It's a bummer because I would love to move off of social media and use an alternative, but local stuff can't be accessed by things like RSS feeds and lots of businesses don't really do newsletters anymore - or in some cases don't even bother with websites.
There are a lot of people circlejerking in this thread about not using social media and patting themselves on the back, but people who like to go outside their house and who want and actually try to keep in touch with friends can find it pretty useful. Also, Lemmy and forums are practically social media - so stop being so hypocritical with your reality warped dissonance. I see too much of that already on Instagram and reddit.
Assumptions, exaggerations and over-assertions being said by yours and others' comments - and to be quite frank that toxic attitude turns me off of using Lemmy and the fediverse in the same way it turned me off of using reddit. Of all the communities I explore on Lemmy, this fediverse community is full of the kinds of posts and comments that would make the average person --or anyone, really-- assume this community is full of pompous jerks and isn't worth exploring. Fediverse is not user friendly to the average person, whether or not the community ever wants to admit it - and until it finally admits as such and attempts solutions the fediverse will probably fail. Modern technology can be as agile as possible, but if the user experience is still unfriendly it simply does not work to peak efficiency. The bogus superiority complex here needs to be squashed.
